Default sloppy steering

While driving I can move the steering wheel back and forth about 3 to 4 inchs before my front wheels will turn. How can I tighten that back up? Thanks for any info.

THERE IS AN ADJUSTMENT ON TOP OF THE STEERING BOX. CHECK THE SERVICE MANUAL.

First thing would be to have someone under the front to see where the slack is. When you turn the wheel let them or you see which point is slack. Steering box has some adjustment. The linkage on our rides catch he!!. If it has delay in movement, replace it. Might also want to jack up the front and check wheel bearings while your at it.

I agree...crawl under the front first while someone is turning the wheel and see where the play is. Could be in the steering gear...intermediate shaft...tie rod ends...or trac bar. You have to narrow it down, because replacing all those things at once is quite $$$$$$ [>:]

The play looks like it is from the colum going into the steering box? Tie rods, ball joints all look fine.

If that is indeed where your play is, then it's the intermediate shaft.

However, if the shaft is turning into the box, but nothing is moving coming out of the box...then it's the box itself.

Either way, www.pscmotorsports.com should be your one and only stop. They sell the best replacement steering box, if yours is indeed shot and not just out of adjustment. They also sell the higher quality borgenson replacement intermediate shaft.

I had about 110 degrees of play (a hell of a lot).
got the lower ball joints replaced, now it is down to about 25 degrees of play.

if it seems like the truck trips over its self during tight turns in 2wd, then it is probably ball joints.

What do you mean by tripping over itself? I just noticed mine is kind of loping when I turn out at slow speeds, you can really feel it in the wheel kinda like it's bumping thru the turn! I looked at all of the steering components and it seems like there's quite a bit of play going into my steering box too! Would that be the cause, or the joints like you said? And How can I tell the difference? Any thoughts would be great!!

If the shaft going into the box is turning, but the pitman arm coming out of the box is NOT turning, then it's the box itself. Either it's out of adjustment or the pitman arm is worn....in other words, time for a new box.

If the shaft going into the box indeed does have the play in it (which is common), just pick up a new borgenson shaft and replace the worn stock shaft.
