yeah it was the cap that i replaced.

and yeah i never get a code.

My truck is a 96' 5.2L V-8 with an automatic transmission

so you think it is one of those two sensors.

Do you know how much those normally cost, and do you know how to be sure excaclty which sensor i need to replace.

And once again thank you for helping.
Considering all of the other parts you listed as having replaced, I wouldn't even question how much a new sensor will cost. The fuel pump alone is costly, and you did that twice. []
yeah but see, the mechanic i have taken it too has not charged me after he fixed the first fuel pump. it was a 300 dollar bill and since then he hasnt charged me to do anything else to my truck, seeing as how he really hasnt fixed it...he wont charge. So i have replaced all those parts and he has not charged me for anything other than the fuel pump. I actually am pretty lucky.

yeah thats sounds like what mine is doing too so after what happened this morning i will try the cam and crank sensors but when i went to tune up the truck this morning with the plugs i put a socket on it and proceeded to turn the wrench and the plug broke off....with little tension....i have never seen this before like this....i mean when a plug is tight i quit turning and leave that one and do the others but this one took very little pressure and broke off, so it is stuck in the head then i thought i would try another one and the very same damn thing happened to the next one.....[:@] i have never seen this before, not like this but they have the shield around the plugs and they are very rusted at the bottoms and i even put some rust buster down there.....soooooo now the truck got pulled to my local mechanic who has to pull off the heads and try to drill them out.....havent even tried to turn on the other six olugs....lol....i will let him do it.....but to take off the head and get all them plugs out and put the new plenum gasket and new head gaskets and put all the things i was going to do this morning plugs, cap, rotor, coil, cam sensor will run 600.00 and by the way they were junk champion plugs....update later!!!!!!!

When I started reading this series, I assumed that sakdaddyg's ride had a manual tranny since it was restarting on it's own. Then I read that he's running an auto. Someone wanna tell me how an automatic restarts without cranking? I mean, you USED to be able to push start an automatic (back when they still had rear pumps) but that hasn't been true since ... what ... the late `60s?

Sakdaddyg: Is the motor actually dying or are you just losing electrical indication?

... or did I recently suffer a stroke and not know it?

Whew ... no stroke.

I had a vision of sakdaddyg in his truck, slowly coasting down the shoulder, tires crunching in the gravel, radio playing Patsy Cline, when suddenly ... the ghost motor coughs once ... twice ... then roars back to life.

All is right with the world ... except sakdaddyg's truck doesn't wanna work right.

This is probably a long shot but a similar thing happened to a fellow dodge truck owner friend of mine. He is small framed guy, every time he stopped his truck he would move the steering wheel up as high as it would go. When he got in he would lower it to his driving position. Turns out that the multiple actuations of the steering wore through the insulation of his key ignition wire. Occasionally, randomly the engine would quit, then restart, sometimes it just wouldn't start. But he found that if he moved the steering up or down it would start again. So, don't know if you have adjustable steering, nor if you tend to adjust it a lot but if you haven't solved the problem yet, you might look into a worn through key ignition wire.

After reading all the replies the only other ting I can think of, does it have remote keyless entrey or an aftermarket remote starter? I had a friend who had an aftermarket remote keyless entrey that was spliced into the ignition system to shut it off for anti-theft. The problem was the installers wire nuted everything under the dash. WIRE NUTS are for houses not cars and truks they like to wiggle loose in those. Anyway you didn't mention if you did. My budy's anti-theft wire nut came loose and it acted just like you are discribing.
