crank sensor mod question
Thanks for the info. Maybe I have an off year or aftermarket sensor because like I said, on the outer edges of the bracket, the metal is only 1/4in wide from the existing hole to the edge in the left-right direction. I went ahead and elongated the holes, but I left just barely (maybe 2/32) a little metal around the edges. If I were to go the full 3/8, it would pretty much leave the bracket hanging there, with only the lip of it making contact and being held down by the bolts. Should I just go ahead and cut it completely? Ramdamit, I did pretty much exactly as it appears you did. I left just a slight amount of metal on that outer edge.
I believe most of us have faced the same situation as you. I elongated mine as far as I could and it still did not get an extra 3/8 inch. Left a small amount of metal on the edge myself just like you did.
I couldn't get 3/8's either, just not enough metal there. I was going to open the hole right up to try and get some more room but I started to get a little bit of pinging so I definitely didn't need to go any more. I may have to adjust it back some, but I'm going to up my octane and I just put in some autolite 3923 sparkplugs to try and keep it from pinging.
When I did it I was able to immediately notice a change in throttle response. As I have driven more miles with it it even feels like the engine is running smoother. Before doing the mod my engine always hesitated during partial throttle ( normal driving ). It felt like a real dog.
After I got it all together, the motor seemed to rev up more quickly. Didn't notice much difference except for I was able to break the tires loose more easily in a turn. Came to a dead stop and did a brake stand. Normally it wouldn't break loose very easily and I think I can contribute it to the heavy fiberglass camper. Tires started spinnng fairly quickly. I have noticed a little bit more torque. Will keep an eye on the economy side for the next week or so.
On the passenger side bank, reach behind the head and down. Kind of follow the tranny dip stick tube down. If you have a small inspection mirror, you can stick it back there and look. There should be 1 wire coming off of it. The wire on mine was green. The instructions say to do it from underneath the truck. I don't know how that was done because I had exhaust pipes and transmission in the way. It was easier for me to lay over the passenger front fender and reach behind with my left hand. I was able to get a deep well 1/2in socket and 3in extension on the bolt then put the ratchet on and start turning. I've got fairly skinny arms and there was no way I could reach up or around anything to get to the sensor from underneath unless I dropped the Y pipe.
I was able to reach up from underneath on my truck. It's a tight squeeze but once you know were it is you can actually see it a little. I prefer to see what I'm doing rather than doing it blind and reaching around the head. My buddy's truck we had to go around the head and I found it took longer, but as on chief0299's truck we weren't able to get our arms up past the pipes.
