Default crank sensor mod question

Am in the process of doing ckp sensor mod and have a question for anyone who has done it. Do I notch or elongate the holes so the sensor can move left-right or front-back in relation to the crankshaft? The write up on it say to notch the holes 3/8in in either direction, but there's only rughly 1/4 of metal around the bolt hole on the outer edges. Somebody help me out please. If this sound odd, I can e-mail you a pic of my sensor and show you what I'm talking about. I believe it should be left-right because of the rotation of the engine and all, but the remaining amount of metal on bracket can only let me move it 1/4 and still leave enough for the bolts to grab on to.

Thanks,
Chief

Default RE: crank sensor mod question

I recently completed the mod and left-right is correct. However, what I did was elongate the holes to where I could move the sensor one direction and that was toward the oil filter. This allows me a very easy method of moveing it back to the factory location. I elongated my hole to a total length of 3/8 inch, but other s have elongated the full 3/8 inch by going out the end. The goal of this is to be able to move the sensor toward the oil filter on the left side of the engine not toward the front of the engine or toward the transmission.

Hope this helps.

I only slotted it one way also so as turkeyhunter said it would easily return to the stock position if I needed it to. Here's a pic if it helps.

i did it one way too, but i cut the entire hole out to a slot... i did it with a dremmel cutting wheel. make sure you do it so that it slides toward the oil filter though. if you do it the wrong way you retard the timing.

im having a fuel pump problem right now so i'm not running quite rightany way but i did notice a little improvement. Its the equivalent to turning the distributor on some vehicles.

Default RE: crank sensor mod question

this is from another thread that was going on the other day

quote:

I found this while researching the DF ... I knew about the base timing mod but did not figure it as a "CURE" for the DF:

WANT TO CURE THE “DEATH FLASH?

Do you have a 2000 or newer truck that no PCM is offered for or the dealer pulled 4 degrees of timing out of, with the DRBIII to keep your truck from having detonation or pre-ignition problems, and now the truck is a pig? Sluggish and generally will not spin the tires from a stoplight, even with a 360?

Then advance your timing.

Your timing is set initially by the crankshaft sensor and the distributor has the camshaft sensor in it to determine when the injectors fire relative to the amount of valve opening. So moving the distributor does not affect base timing. But moving the crankshaft sensor relative to it's current position does. The trick is this, and takes about one hour. This will work on any Dodge truck 92- to present except for the 4.7L or the V-10.

Remove the crankshaft sensor on the aft/passenger side of the block. It is held down by (2) 1/2" bolts and pulls out of the tranny bell housing when loose. There is a rubber grommet in the bell housing also, remove it. Now look at the sensor's bracket, notice the 2 bolt holes. Slot each hole 3/8" both ways, still giving the bolts something to hold onto. Then insert the sensor back into the bell housing, making sure you pulled out the rubber grommet. Thread the 2 bolts back in loose, then slide the sensor as far as it can, towards the oil filter, away from the intake. This will advance, moving it towards the intake in the same direction of crank rotation and will retard the base timing; do not do this unless your teenager is driving the truck. It will usually be limited by the bell housing how far you can move it. If you are really brave, grind the bell housing and fab a new adjustable bracket. This will add 3-4 degrees of timing across the whole board of advance tables, and cure the Death Flash problem in your Magnum. That'll be $5 please...just kidding!

It's usually good on vehicles with the "death flash" because the flash retards the timing and the mod advances it some to try to return it where it was. If you already have some pinging then it's this mod probably isn't a good idea. Of course if you were thinking of retarding your timing a little to reduce pinging then you could do this mod and slide the sensor the other way, but there are other ways to reduce pinging. (180 degree thermostat, higher octane gas, lower temp spark plugs).

Default RE: crank sensor mod question

If you attempt this mod
be aware that the crank position sensor
is very sensitive to the clearance between the end of the sensor and the notches it reads.

If you slot the holes to move it
and the new mounting point either lifts it slightly or lets it seat deeper
you will have problems.
