RE: Buttoned Up - Starting Issues
OK, I followed the directions in the FSM, setting the harmonic balancer at TDC and then figured out that the distributor body can be rotated to move the #1 cylinder marking inline with the rotor. I did that, rewired the distributor (what the hell are you all using for plug wire holders?), and then got her started. It sounds better and holds the idle well. On a whim, I pulled the IAC and had my sister turn the key. The plunger didn't move. I'm thinking that the IAC is bad, and that it could be contributing to some of my issues. Any thoughts?

My accels came with wire looms but I don't have my wires routed "right" according to the TSB. They are custom fit so I made mine a little shorter than the stock ones just so I wouldn't have all that excess to worry about. If you have stock wires this probably wont help you though. If the IAC is bad it surely won't help you any. You might try cleaning and lubing it because it could just be stuck.

the amount that it moves is real small, reset the comp, then do the test again. some say that they had problems after doing it w/the sensor yanked so you may want to watch it in the TB. I think they mentioned having the plunger push it's way out of the housing and difficulties putting it back in. (you may want to research that).
So what happened to the tons of power it made after you got it started for the 1st time? was that the trip when it was cold outside?

How can I watch the IAC in the TB, and what should I use to lubricate it.
As far as the power after the first time, it felt good, but I was babying it until it got a few hundred miles on it. I'm barely at 200 miles now and I am still babying it but can tell there's something missing. I'm headed to Texas today (in another vehicle) and will check with a muffler shop I know to see if they can check the temp of my cat tomorrow.

I would first clean it up really good with carb cleaner if you haven't already. You can lubricate with whatever spray lube you like to use, I like silicone lube but it really won't matter much. As far as seeing it move inside the TB you are gonna have to wait for Steve to answer that one.

have the TB unbolted and upside down, you can see the valve like that. that way it cant push all the way out on you.
you can check the cat but with your other issues swapping it out may not be good for the new one. If it's definately plugged, ask him he can open it up so you can put a couple of holes in it until you have things squared away. I still say fix your gas issue 1st before trying to debug anything else beyond the cat.

I was gone all day and when I got home, gas was spouting out of the vent line on the tank. When I opened the gas cap, there was a whoosh of venting and the siphoning stopped. I am very perplexed about this.
I am thinking my truck was getting vapor locked on Thursday when I had hell coming home.

the vent tube is connected to the filler tube, you do mean the evap hose... ??

so it sat all day and it's pushing its way out the evap line still... how hot was it there and how much fuel is in the tank? the only thing I can think of is the solenoid we were talking about earlier.... test it and see if its working right.
