Default What spray ahesive to use on my headliner?

My headliner is out and I am in the tedious process of scraping the old foam off the backing. What adhesive should I use to adhere the new headliner to the backing? I would like to know what people have used and had good luck with.

3M makes a few different kinds of adhesive. Which one have you had success with?

heres a tip, for better adhesion, spray the headliner board with a laytex spray paint after its cleaned up, it will allow the glue to hold firmer.

I use "3M General Trim Adhesive-Clear"-08088 when I do my headliners or pretty much anything else. Just be sure you get the new headliner positioned right 'cause there is no second chance.

I second the motion to coat the bare headliner -- I used kilz primer -- but I think it helps to hold together any "stray" fibers and provide a good solid surface.

I laid the fabric upside-down adjacent to the beginning edge, then sprayed the adhesive a few inches ahead of the edge and "curled" the fabric over a little at the time so I didn't have to worry about getting adhesive / fabric all tangled up... because like rewdram said -- no second chance.

Thanks for all your replies. I just completed the recovering of my headliner and it really came out perfect!

I used a can of the kilz primer I had to coat the headliner. This was actually a great idea because it allowed me to see the areas which I still had a little bit of the foam backing on the headliner. After scraping everything off I primed again and let it dry.

Then I used the 3M 08090 Spray Adhesive and that **** is sticky! Coated the hell out of it, let it set up for about 5 mins and went at it.

First impressions is the headliner looks awesome. Now we will just have to see how long it lasts.

Next time I will probably have it done though. I called a couple shops around me and as long as I had the headliner out they wanted $40 to pull the old and install the new. The 3M adhesive is $15.88 per can. Only needed one can but add that to the hour prep work involved and it would have been $40 well spent. On the other hand I wanted to do it just for the reason that I have never tried it before.

Overall to me this is about as difficult as chaning a tire and that's a stretch!
