ORIGINAL: ASH

Here's pictures of the 3" high filter installed. I had the original 2" high filter on and ran that for a few months. You could hear it sucking air, especially at partial throttle. It had a fairly distinct whistle. With the 3" high filter, it is quiter at partial throttle. I think that this is because the larger filter allows the air to come in at a lower velocity, so you don't get as much noise.

But when I stomped on it it roared like I never heard that truck roar. At WOT, the old girl was much louder and had improved pickup in the mid to high range compared to the 2" high filter. I think the PCM is adjusting to the improved air flow. At partial throttle I was lugging it around 1200 rpm in OD lockup and it acted like it couldn't decide whether or not to shift, and the RPM's jump around a little. The truck did this before when I had made some modifications, but seemed to smooth out over time.

I stomped it from a dead stop. It didn't break the tires loose, which doesn't surprise me since the truck is heavier than most being an extended cab long bed and carrying a fiberglass cap. But I was impressed after a few runs at WOT while moving. My truck never picked up like that before. It roared and the tach just climbed like crazy. I can't wait to give it a run again tomorrow.

Thanks to Silver_Dodge and Racinfan83 for prompting me to try out the 3" filter. I might even have to eat my words and go get a high performance 3" filter and see if that helps any. Now I just have to convince my wife that the exhaust needs to be replaced and stick on a 3" exhaust. Silver, you were right, these mods are addicting and once you start, you just can't stop.

I am running the Eldebrok Proflow 1002 and it makes a lot of sucking sound at partial throttle also (which I don't really care for). It sounds good when you get on it, but I normally drive at partial throttle which means it sounds like I have a tire going flat under the hood about all the time! I have a Moroso low profile 14 x 3 filter on the way and hopefully it will sound better like you mentioned above. My main concern with this setup is in the summer, will it cause issues because of the heat? I live in VA and our summers normally run about 85-90 degrees (high humidity). I may invest in a cold air intake (Ebay $50) for the summer if I have any issues.

Ya, i'm curious to see how mine performs in the hot summer too (ambient temps above 95 degrees).

Ash, do you still have the flaps next to the radiator installed? I removed the one on the passenger side awhile back so cold air could come in directly on my K&N FIPK filter. I just left it open when I changed over to the round filter, thinking it would help push cold air up into the engine compartment. I wonder if it helps at all, or if I am risking getting a gust of air coming in and blowing up my hood.

if your hood is locked down it's not going to blow off. you may want to consider some ducting of some sort on both sides to redirect the airflow directly at the air filter. I would assume there is alot of turbulent air in there and it could use the extra help from the front.

a hood scoup would help out alot using the open air element.

Haven't got a good read on mileage yet. Performance is definetly good though. I'm still running the paper filter too since the original K&N I bought turned out to be just a little too big in diameter. It is louder too, escpecially when you first start up in the morning and everything is cold. Can really hear the sucking air.
Did the 14" round K&N filter not fit in this setup? I am awaiting delivery of the same air cleaner as you have and would like to use a K&N filter instead of the paper one. Please post up which k&N filter ends up working the best for you.

Let me clarify. A K&N will work, but the one I originally bought was not the correct diameter, so it didn't fit correctly. My set-up, by the way, is not 14" diameter, it is a 13.25" diameter. The first K&N I bought was 13.25", but it did not fit as well as I would have liked. I have since returned it, and have a 13.125 sitting in my garage ready to try out. I think it is because the base and the lid are 13.25", but the filter needs to be slightly smaller to fit correctly in the groves around the edges of the lid and base. Once I try the K&N I have in the garage, i'll let you know if it fits good or not so you know which one to buy (if you bought the same setup I have).
