Default 10" Round Air Cleaner???

Silver just recently did a post on how he switched from the FIPK to a Mopar 14" round air cleaner setup. I was messing around yesterday, and tried my 14" round air cleaner off my Nova on the truck. It won't fit because the TB is too short and the "dish" in the bottom plate of the aircleaner is too deep. So, I was looking at air cleaners at the store and noticed that the 10" round one would probably work, as it is not recessed on the bottom. They also have a 3" tall K&N filter that would fit it. Total cost around $60 - whereas Silvers air cleaner its self was $70. I'm a cheapskate......
SO - what does everybody think? Would there be any mileage or performance benefits by going to this deal over my current K&N drop-in filter? Any problems?

Get what you pay for, cheap out and get so so results. Spend the money here, it will make a noticeable difference if you do compared to the 10"
A 10x3" will flow about 30% less than the 14x3 will. I would suggest you find the correct 1/2" drop base instead and use the 14x3' filter. Probably find a drop base for 20-25 I would think at a performance shop.

Thats what I was wondering. Next question is...will a 3" with a drop base fit under the cowl?? Silver - is the bottom of yours a "drop base" or is it something custom???

A 14"x3" will fit under the cowl, but you need a .5" or greater drop base, or a body lift. I am not sure if mine is a drop base. The bottom of the filter is level with the top of the TB, so I don't think it is. it would be very hard to get a 3" tall filter to fit with my setup. The filter I am using is 2.75" tall, and there is a little space left, but not much. If you could install the bolt after the lit, a 3" would probably fit no problem. But since the bolt is an s-bolt, you have to install it first, and then you have to lift the lid over the bolt before it can set down with the bolt coming through the lid. That makes a tall filter difficult to install.

Copy That. I'll do some more looking and see what I can come up with. Any dope on your power or increased mileage with your setup yet?

Here is the 14" round assembly that I put on my truck. Brand is Mr. Gasket and it is available through Advanced Auto and also Summit racing. Link for Summit Racing

I thought it had a raised base, but the description on Summit shows it is as flat base. It comes with a 2-1/4" high filter, but I'm pretty sure I can get a 3" high on it. I've been searching for a part number for a 3" high filter so I can try it out. If not, I'll see if anyone sells a 2-1/2" or 2-3/4" high filter and give those a shot.

This assembly fit up nice and sealed well. It looks good, IMO. Check out my gallery for the pictures of it installed. I did the same thing as Silver and put a filter on the breather tube from the left valve cover. I also moved the IAT sensor and put in in the air filter assembly. The price is reasonable, especially since it comes with all the parts.

Haven't got a good read on mileage yet. Performance is definetly good though. I'm still running the paper filter too since the original K&N I bought turned out to be just a little too big in diameter. It is louder too, escpecially when you first start up in the morning and everything is cold. Can really hear the sucking air.

Any more than 1/2" drop base will hit the brackets off the back of the alt/ac. to beerbarrel/m1. With a 3" filter on it there will be enough room below the cowl. Max would be 3 1/4" tall filter.

I just picked up a 14" x 3" filter at Advanced Auto. I went with a Purlator filter since I prefer a throw away filter over the re-usable ones. Part is A60074. They had the same Mr. Gasket air filter housing that I installed on my truck, so I test fit the filter on the one in the store to make sure it fit. I'll put it on tonight and check the under the hood clearance. If it doesn't fit, they also have a 14" x 2.5" that I'll purchase. I'll take the truck to work tomorrow and see if it makes any difference.

Racinfan83, you were looking for a cheap intake. This cost me a total of $32 for the combination of the air filter housing plus the replacement filter.

RECALCULATED AREAS - I SCREWED UP EARLIER.

As a comparison, the stock filter is 13.5" x 6.6". This provides 89.1 square inches of filter.

The 14" x 2" filter provides 87.9 square inches of filter.

The 14" x 3" filter provides 132 square inches of filter.

Note that these numbers are rough. I'm not taking into account the pleats in the filter and I'm using outside dimensions, but they provide a good comparison.

This is one reason I didn't go with the K&N or similar performance 14" x 3" filter. Besides being a cheapskate also, the 14" diameter filters provide so much more filtering area over stock, that I can't see spending 8 times as much on a filter. My truck isn't modded heavily enough to justify the extra flow of a performance filter. I did notice a difference when I replaced the stock intake with the 14" x 2" filter assembly. I had just installed the 180 degree thermostat and installed the Hypertech programmer. I ran it a little with the stock intake, then replaced it. With those mods in place, it helped the truck.

Note I messed up my calculations above and changed them. I knew something wasn't right. But the 14" x 3" filter provides about 1.5 times the filtering area of the stock, which is quite a bit. The 14" x 2" is comparable to stock, but the round design has better flow characteristics than the stock setup provides.
