I have a 98 Ram 4X41500 with a 5.9L and a 4 speed auto transmission. Whenever I am at idle or in drive I hear a tap noise as if it were the valves tapping, yet it was serviced about two weeks ago and the engine was overhauled as per Chrysler Maitenence schedule. I can also hear the noise when I am cruising as well. There is 93300 miles on the odometer. I really need to know if its the norm or if I got myself a problem.thanks guys.
What exactly did you have done as part of an engine overhaul? A tapping sound can be anything from a lifter to an exhaust manifold leak. Where exactly do you hear it coming from?
the noise is coming from the top end and as far as overhaul i had what was specified in the 99,000 mile item list as well ascleaning and polishing the pistons and the heads, alsoreplaced the wires and plugs and had the tranny inspected and flushed. Thats about it I can get more specific if you would like?
What is your oil pressure at when you hear this tapping noise?
Could be your oil pump pickup screen is partially clogged. Was the oil pan cleaned out as well of any gunk and debris?
First, you could trying adding some Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil. I had engine noise and during an oil change i added a can of Marvel and it makes the engine run a lot quieter, a lot of the noises went away. I add a can at every oil change.
