Just a little bit of info. Over in Europe they use the same oil we do and most companies on the other side of the pond have much longer drain intervals than the US auto makers. Why? Because US Automakers are in bed with big oil. Read uponthis at amsoil.com. Just imagine the millions of barrels of oil we could save if we extended our drain intervals to just 7500 miles. My sister has a BMW and her drain interval is every 15000 miles! I'm pretty sure that BMW knows what they are doing. However, both BMW and Amsoil tell you, to get longer drain intervals, you MUST use synthetic oil.

NS. BMW's oil change interval is 15000 miles? Why would mobil 1 market thier "extended life" motor oil as being good for only 7500 miles. I'm thinkin on it, but just can't figure it up in my head.

i'm too lazy to search for the link now, but i read a test that was conducted on oil life in a camaro. they had the oil tested every few weeks or a month, and it was analyzed for metal content and all that good stuff. i'm not going to bring up everything, but the end result is they had the oil in the motor for roughly 24,000 miles before there was deteriorating performance effects. they did change oil filters every 5k miles, but reused the same oil.

and, according to their lab test results, more wear occurred in the first 3000 miles than the combined 21,000 miles after that.

I read somewhere that two identical engines were tested for the equivalent of 60,000 miles ... one with regular oil changed every 3000 miles and the other with synthetic ... never changed. After all this, they tore down the motors and mic'ed everything. The synth motor had, like, 0 wear while the regular oil had the expected 60k worth of wear.
