1999 ram 1500 4x4 sport 5.9

I felt a vibration when i bought the truck a few months ago, at highway speeds above 55 MPH.
I rotated the tires and the vibration got better, but still noticable.
Now I feel a shake right under the drivers floor.

everything in the front end seems tight, sway bar, track bar are ok.

Would a severly out of balance rear tire cause the driveshaft to vibrate to the point you could feel it shaking the tranny??
It seems to be the only thing under my feet that might be causing this, and I know the tire is bad??

It's possible you are feeling the shake under the floor because that is where your feet are at. I'm not trying to be a smart alleckwith that comment, but giving you something to think about.

I would start with getting the tires rebalanced. Some places like Wal-Mart and others will give you free balancing for the life of the tire after your initial visit and payment. So if your tires have a lot of life left in them, that might be a worthwhile expenditure. If the tire has started to wear badly, it will go out of balance again as it wears.

Give that a try and see how much it helps. It sounds like it could be the problem since it occurs at certain speeds. And its best to get it taken care of right away before the vibration does start wearing out front end parts.

 

i had the same vibration turns out if i remember correctly the thread was separating from the tire or so on, the tire looked good had a lot of thread life to it but man it drove like...changed tire now my truck is smooth does the vibration make the truck a little jumpy?

 

Could be tires, but at 55mph, sounds to me like the driveshaft, which could mean the U-Joints are worn.

 

is the vibration only at 55 MPH, or does it happen at all speeds above 55 MPH?

 

Seems to be 55 and above, but i've only had the truck up to 65...

How else do you check u joints other than moving the driveshaft by hand?? Everything seems tight under there.
I do get a clunk when I put the truck in reverse from park.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be front wheel bearings. Jack up the front end and grab the tire to see if there is play.

NOTE: THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO 1999 AND 2000 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH EITHER A 42RE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BUILT BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 1999 (MDH 0901XX) OR 2000 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 46RE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BUILT BEFORE DECEMBER 1, 1999 (MDH 1201XX).

The only 1999 vehicles this TSB applies to are those equiped with 42RE transmissions and the only vehicles that have 42RE transmissions have 3.9L V6 engines. Since you both have 5.9L V8's, you have 46RE transmissions and the only model year with 46RE transmissions this TSB applies to is 2000.

Look elsewhere.
