Motherboard or not you might try to get your hands on a USB keyboard and USB thumbdrive. Keep rebooting till everything comes up normal and you just might be able to pull it off and get your files onto the thumbdrive.
If you can get it on the network have your IT buddies map to the admin share and pull your files off ASAP. (they will know what I am talking about) No keyboard needed, just network connection. Might save you some time and headache.
If that does not work, pull the harddrive out and get you an external USB case that you can connect to another computer. Even if you have to rig it and crosswire it yourself (or your IT buddies) you can get your data.
Tell your IT buddies they need to be more resourcefull.
Hope it works out for you.. That sux!

na, pulling a hard drive out won't void the warranty. The hard drive should just have a small lid over wher eit's located in the laptop. Taking it out and sticking it inside a 2.5" external enclosure will get you full access to all of your files. The IT guys at OSU should have a few of those laying around to grab your files, then you won't have to find those sources again
EDIT: and yes, investing in a thumb drive might be a good idea. You can get a 1gb for like...$15 these days, which is enough room to store a crap load of sources for all your papers :P
