Question Couple Questions.......

1. I have an 05 4dr. 4x4 with the 4.7L magnum, is the magnum the HO or is there a way to tell if it is the regular 4.7L or if it is the HO?

2.It was time for an oil change, went and got the filter which said it was a PH16 fram and got valvoline 5w-30 which is recommended by the manufacture. The first thing i noticed was the fram filter was about 1/2 an inch shorter then the one that came out. Anyways after the oil change I have a ticking noise that goes with the engine as it revs, sounds like a lifter, anyone know if that is what it is for sure? Oil level is fine too.

Edit: Truck has 62,000 miles on it.

it would say HO on the plenum box in clear sight. Fram isn't really a company i donate my oil change money too. but if the book or inventory computer at the store says that's what it crosses too than i wouldn't doubt it. the ticking could be a number of things associated with the valvetrain

our trucks are also famous for breaking studs off the exhaust manifold. (happened to me) the valve tick can be heard if your exhaust is leaking. grab a hold of the heat shield and see if you can wiggle it. (it shares the same bolts that hold the manifold on. if its loose than you need new studs. (easy job for the DIYer)

Sorry, i forgot to mention that after about 2 mins or so of running the sound goes away like oil has finally reached where it is supposed to go. That's why I put all the stuff in there about the oil change, i was afraid the smaller filter may not let enough oil thru on startup to get to the lifters or something.

same thing with the exhaust manifold....once it heats up it stops. i would go try to rattle the manifold real quick. if not than yes, its valvetrain.

Ok it's not the manifold, I started it after trying the manifold to see if something else was loose but nothing around that area was, it sounds like it is coming from just under the valve cover.

ok... than it could be bent valve, lifter tick....so on. to determine if its a bent valve, try to find out which cylinder its coming from and leak-down test that cylinder.

Just incase you werent aware

i would considering dumping that old fram POS and getting a dodge filter or K&N. also i would run full synthetic (but the same weight)

62k is a little uncommon for valvetrain failure, but is also perfect time to start using synthetic

I have got the same year/model truck but with 78k miles. Mine started doing the same exact thing about 1k miles ago. Seemed to start right after an oil change. Level is good. The prior oil change was some synthentic oil with detergent oil change one of these quick change places talked me into. No idea if it's related.

It just passed inspection and is still running great so my solution is turning the radio up so I can't hear the ticking while it warms up.

There are 19 differences betweeen the 4.7L and H.O. counterparts, here you go.
http://www.wjjeeps.com/ho_engine.htm

I use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 5w20 with the Mopar oil filter. As for the click, if its not the exhaust manifold and you are certain its inside the block I would suspect a valve. The only way to be sure is to remove the valve covers and inspect the heads.
