And to raise another point; If for some reason, something failed on your truck from the extra power from the programmer, you would probably want to replace that part anyways.
The Cortex is designed for the newer vehicles and gives a few more options. Both are quality but the Cortex is what I was using before the SCT.

The 3865 and 3950 are identical tune wise and feature wise, etc. The only difference is the Cortex offers a 2 yr powertrain warranty and its gray. The Flashpaq has no powertrain warranty.
I know when I bought my Superchips I called and talked to a rep first. I was informed the Cortex mainly supports 2005 plus (why some G2 Dak guys can't use it) and it gave more tuning options for different types of fuels.

ahhh, yeah you are right I think 2003 is the cut of for the compatibility with the Cortex I was basically going off of just the 3rd Gen Dakota stand point, but yeah Sorry for the confusion...
