Pulling The Heads
I've been lead installer on eight cam 4.7L cam swaps, helped with four others. I installed a set of cams on a 4.6L mustang just about a week ago. I've rebuilt several motors mainly 350's, 351's but those are push rod motors. We are talking SOHC motors here so the 350 really doesn't come into play.
Mods you can expect with the heads off.
High Load Beehive Valve Springs
Cometic Head Gaskets
Complete seal replacement on the manifold, valve covers, Throttle body ,etc.
I will probably paint the valve covers and the intake manifold.
I've been looking into port and polish but can't find anthing reasonable local and I don't want to mail them off so that might have to wait until later.

That thing is going to be wild when you're done! I'd love to do all the work on mine myself when the time comes but I've never gotten into tearing down the actual motor on a vehicle before and I'm a little nervous about the idea of starting on my baby!

from the rebuilds I have done/helped on, the tear downs and rebuilds are the easy part. its getting everything you need that seems to be the pain in the ****. Although, with a partial tear down like blown is doing, there is more room for error. With the timing and intake being open for "stuff" to find its way in, thats when things can get a little hairy.
Blown, have you looked into maybe giving it a slight DIY port and polish/ valve job? I had a great site bookmarked for that very thing and was going to do it to my talon, but I found a place that was reasonable enough to send it off to. I will see if I cant find that link for you.

Rich we all have to start some where, lol. My first was a 78 Silverado regular cab. It had a 350 4 bolt main with a 400 turbo tranny. I popped a head gasket and didn't have the $ to take it to a shop. That was 1992, and I've been a gear head since

Blown, here are a couple sites that you may find interesting...

the the eHow link, instead of spray ink, you would use the actual gaskets to port match too. I still might try this instead of sending the head off.

Rich it isn't to big a deal doing a motor. LIke Eric said the bitch is getting all the parts in one spot at one time. I know the last motor work I did was on the old Dak, and it seemed like I was always running to Napa or one of the parts stores forgetting something stupid or ordering the wrong thing. .
Once a gear head, always a gear head...
