Here's how I understand it.
If the tuner is already programmed to a vehicle, it can only be used on that vehicle. Even if the same model can be used on various vehicles. The only way to transfer it to another vehicle is to have him set his vehicle's tune back to stock, then you pay Superchips $100 to reset the tuner, after which it can be used to tune another vehicle.

The tuner can only be tuned to one vehical at a time. The vehical must be returned back to stock before it can program another vehical.
If you do the trans update, that update must be purcahsed for every vehical. There is no transferring it from vehical to vehical even after the first one is returned to stock.
If you want to try it out, have your friend return his truck to stock and install it on yours. If you like it, return your truck to stock and buy your own.
If you arent set on spending $300 on the tuner, wait it out because superchips is supposed to be making it available that you will be able to tune 2 vehicals with the same tuner for a price. How much, I cant remember but its in the works. You would probably be looking at a $150-200 price tag for that.

this thread cracks me up...
You can swap the tuner between trucks, so long as you return the other vehicle to stock. after you return the ram to stock, you will have to attempt to tune your truck, it will tell you it needs an update. go update and then re-tune.
however, you cant just pay the 100 to unlock it. if you do, you will still only be able to tune one of the trucks. the truck with the first tune on it will be stuck with that tune, and if you wish to re-tune it, you would have to unlock the tuner again.

Why does it crack you up? The way I explained it was the way I've seen it explained on the SC forum. I just assumed they know what they're talking about.
I also always just assumed that the tuner recognizes each vehicle/computer's serial # or whatever, and will only work to tune that particular CPU until the tuner is reset internally.

Just all the different answers.
I swapped back and forth dozens of times with my best friend in his ram. if he had a chevy guy wanting to run, we'd set up the tuner on his truck. All I had to do was return to stock. once you return to stock, the tuner isnt vin locked. to go from dak to ram, you do need to "update" but it doesnt cost anything to do that.
