Default couple quick magnaflow questions

Ive decided on a magnaflow muffler or complete cat system pretty soon to replace my stock system. 2006 4.7l quad cab non-HO.

After reading a lot of the threads it seems I should prolly go ahead and remove both resonators for the best sound performance.

If I buy the complete cat back system would I be able to remove my existing system myself and install the cat back without any welding just using clamps? Or would I be better off buying the cat back system and taking it to a shop to install with welds (I would lean toward the later anyways)?

OR...could I just buy the universal muffler (cheaper than the whole system) and have the shop pipe that in after cutting out the resonators and muffler and have the exhaust end below the rear passenger door?

also, last question....what is the part number for the muffler in the #16621 cat back system....is it the #12256 or a different one?

depends on how confident you are in doing it yourself. I did mine myself using a catback kit I got off ebay, took about 3 hours from start to finish (cutting out the stock system and installing the new one). I used clamps to hold it together then took it to a muffler shop to get it welded up. In hindsight, I should have taken her to a shop that does custom exhausts and had them do it all cause now I'm spending more money to get it how I like it....magnaflow is better than flowmaster IMO, but others have borla, MBRP, gibson, cherry bomb, thrush....it's all personal taste. Personally the flowmaster is obscenely loud, inside and out, i'm replacing my super 44 with a magnaflow single in dual out muffler...

I would also have the exhaust welded on by a shop, it shouldn't cost that much. Not sure if the magnaflow # 12256 is the same muffler in the cat-back system, but that is the model muffler I have and it sounds pretty good IMO.

We used that kit on my Wife's Durango and it worked great. No welding, just make sure you have everything lined up before you start torquing everything down. Once you have all the hangers in place and torque it to spec, it will sound great. We never got ours welded but you can if you want it certainly won't hurt.

Are you wanting single in and dual out? that will determine what muffler part number you need. Single in and Single out is part number that dakotaff listed, 12256. Single in and dual out is part number 12198.

Here is the kit I got on ebay.

He will throw in a set of tips for like $20 more. I had mine installed and welded at a local mechanic shop for $75. I thought about doing it myself but decided to pay the $75 to have it welded and lined up correctly, plus it took the guy that did it like 2 hours to do while the truck was in the air so I imagine it would of taken me longer If I would of done it in my driveway and not been as nice a job or welded, etc.... The guy did a very clean install. Make sure you call all the muffler shops around you for the best price. I was quoted anywhere from $75-$200 to install. I really love the look and sound of it.

I bought my MBRP cat back and had it installed by a shop because it was worth the $100 IMO. It is just held on my clamps. Every once in a while I have to get under there and loosen them up to even out the exhaust pipes coming out the rear because I get irritated when one is lower than the other, but its been fine for a while now. If its aluminized I wouldnt get it welded because it will warp with heat eventually and you may want to straighten it out.

I installed the #16621 cat-back on my '05 a few months back. I made 2 cuts to get the old one out, one at the axle and one about 2 feet after the cat pipe.

The only thing that caused me issues was the front band clamp after the Y-Pipe. The clamp had to be cut off and forcibly removed and after which left only the remaining 2 feet of pipe, which was a beotch to get off as well....but was not welded on.

The kit went on pretty quickly...I did not weld mine but after 25 miles of driving, I would recommend getting back under it and re tighten everything again.

Question single or dual catback system ?

I am looking at the magnaflow systems as well, but prefer the look of the 16622 single to dual system. Any owners of this type of exhaust? or similar like MBRP? what are pro's and con's of single or dual outlets - both performance-wise and sound? Also, will rear duals clear factory 17" spare?

My system fit around the spare no problem. as far as pros and cons on single versus duals, it was all a matter of preference for me. I liked the look of duals coming out the back. Costs weigh in as well, duals would be more expensive simply due to more to them. I just replaced my flowmaster super44 with a magnaflow single in/dual out. It might be a little quieter inside, but it still drones at certain RPM's (@1700-1800). Honestly not that very different sounding than than the flowmaster from what I've heard so far.
