Default 06 dakota 9.25 gear swap

Does anyone have any clue how or why when you go to a 4.56 gear ratio the axles will not go back in because of the spider gear shaft hits the ring gear when you try to take it out to install the axles. I believe the speed sensor is installed in the rear end and it seems that the gear that is built on the carrier housing is the issue. I need some major insight fast. Please help.

Well not sure if its the same for the 9.25 as it is for 8.25 but when I had my jeep with the 8.25 and you switch to a 4.56, because of the size difference in the ring gear you have to grind down a SMALL protion of the teeth to get the wpider gear shaft to go in or out.

Yeah thats what i had to do. i grinded down one tooth just enough to slide it in. Now i am having issues with the front which is a 8in and it appears that we wont be able to get the proper pinion depth in order to get the correct gear pattern.

My understanding is you can also buy a modified cross pin or rework the pin yourself. I am considering 4.10 or 4.56 gears and just can't decide. For me with the stock 265/65/17 wheels it is a tough choice. I think 4.56 would be perfect in town but the highway RPMs seem a little high for my 30.5 inch tall tires.

Anyway, like the above posters said you can either grind a couple of teeth or modify the cross pin. Good luck and let us know how the gear swap went.

I have 4.10 gears. My rear differential is 9.25, with 31 spline. There are several reasons to change gears ratios. Bigger tires, better towing, better in town MPG.
