Pinion Seal at 54K?
Well, my first major issue with my truck reared it's head this morning. I was at the brake shop getting my first set of new brakes (yes at 54,000 miles) on Saturday. All is well and then the tech calls me into the garage to show me that the rear axle at the driveshaft is covered in transaxle fluid. Thinks it could've been leaking for a few months. I had no symptons, but after seeing that it went to the dealer today. I have the lifetime powertrain warranty, so it's covered. But at 54K, this shouldn't be an issue.
I also have this random "Click" when hitting the brakes. It doesn't happen all of time, but it is very annoying. Took it back to the brake shop and he could duplicate it, but there is nothing wrong with the brakes. Could it have something to do with the pinion seal issue? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That is one issue with almost everything made TODAY. "this shouldn't be an issue"
I replaced mine about 54,000 also, under warranty of coarse
As like all products made, cars or not. A lot of items are becoming so cheap that they wear out prematurely.
Example
1980 Kitchen mixer stand - cast iron built, metal gears, motor that will last forever, built like a tank
2012 mixer stand - plastic built, with plastic gears, cheapo motor, will last just long enough for you to say I got it cheap and got my money's worth out of it, I will just go buy another one.

My next truck will probably be an 88-95 Chevy 1500 with a V8. Reason 1 is no emissions, reason 2 is parts are a dime a dosen, and finally they are built like tanks. The whole time I owned my 94 1500, I replaced a starter and had to replace the spark plugs. The previous owner was a friend of the family and the only thing they EVER had to replace was the clutch around 100k. I sold it with about 140k and to this day I question whether I should have or not. Vehicals these days just dont have the same quality as they used to.

I bought a 1997 Chevy Silverado, extended cab, 8' bed, 4x4 350 V8 brand new from Suburban Chevrolet, now Tom Gill Chevrolet...60 month, 60,000 mile warranty...at 15K miles the head gasket was erroded away from the dexcool anti freeze chevy uses..they replaced it, at 40,000 miles the head gasket went again, they replaced it.. I owned the truck for 5 and a half years, it had 54,000 miles on it and the motor spun a crank bearing.
I took it back to the dealer, they informed me that the truck was out of warranty, I stressed that the crank bearing was a direct result of the head gaskets blowing and putting water in the oil... they tried to get GM to OK the warranty work as pre-existing damage that was caused during the warranty period, GM denied the claim.
The truck was still immaculant body wise, and mechanically other then the motor the truck was in top condition, So I paid 3800 bucks to have a brand new 350 from GM installed in the truck, they gave me a 24 month 24,000 mile warranty on the new motor...at 72,000 miles I changed the oil and it had water in it..which was about 18000 miles on the new motor.. I took the truck in to the dealer and told them I wanted the motor broke down to the crank and inspected for damage caused by the water in the oil..they agreed but when they tried to get the OK from GM, GM only cleared them to replace the head gasket.
I wrote several letters to GM asking that they make the situation right..they offered to give me blue book value towards trade in on a new truck ( How nice of them )
I contacted a lawyer about the lemon law, and he said I would have had a case when the original motor blew given the consitant break downs, but he couldn't file it a year and a half later.
I had the new head gasket installed and sold that P.O.S.
I will never buy another GM again...My wife drives a 2006 Pontiac Solstice that she owned before we got married, it will be the last GM product that ever sits in my driveway. My father and Uncle have drove chevy trucks since they were old enough to drive..after my ordeal with GM my uncle bought a Dodge Ram, My father is 66 years old...in my 40 years of existance on this planet, I can't remember my father ever owning anything other than a chevy truck.. he is the guy who after a chevy wins a nascar race he would make 4 phone calls to rub it in on his ford buddies..... last year he bought a Toyota Tundra ... my older brother who previously had only driven chevy cars and trucks bought an F-150.... his wife who had owned a beretta, a Cavalier, and a Cavalier z-24 convertible as her last 3 cars..all bought brand new from suburban chevrolet and Tom Gill...just traded the Z-24 in on a brand spanking new Mazda 3.
At our next family reunion I plan on putting My Dakota, My Uncles Ram, My fathers Toyota, My sister in laws Mazda and my Brother's F-150 in a row...have us all stand in front of our non-chevy trucks, take a picture and send it to GM thanking them for steering us all in the right direction.

All is fixed. Pinion Seal covered under my lifetime drivetrain warranty and the brake click is gone. Good to go.
