Rough shift between Park, Neutral and Reverse...
I just purchased a 2007 Dakota SLT with the automatic transmission.
I have noticed that when shifting from Park into neutral that there is a bit of a bang and the truck jerks a bit. It sounds worse than it is. It's really not too bad but it happens almost every time I put the truck in neutral from both park and drive and I don't think it's normal. I haven't noticed any other shifting problems though.
Anyone else have this problem or know what might be causing it?

was going to say the exact same thing...when mine was done by VALVOLINE they did not add enough fluid so after 3 days of this hard shifting sound i checked it and it was low...filled it up to where it was full and no probles since then!

Yup, there are actually 2 filters in the transmission. Its never a bad idea to take the the truck to a well-known transmission shop and have them drop the pan and replace the 2 filters, and change the fluid for you. I also had them do a low-pressure flush on mine as well to exchange the fluid in the trans cooler and torque converter. You do not want any flush performed that claims its a high pressure reverse flush or anything of that nature.
And also, there are a couple of transmission relearns in the downloadable service manual for the problem you are stating. It basically involves you starting the truck and doing a sequence of shifts and that is also another fix to the hard shifting.
