Default Tranny stuck in first gear

Greetings;
I'm a newly forum registered owner of a 2007 Dakota ST quad cab 4x4. I purchased the truck in July with 9000 miles and am now at 20,000 trouble free miles...until today.

When I drove home from work, the automatic tranny would not shift out of first gear. I drove about 5 miles to a parts store where I checked fluid level, which was fine. I then drove a couple more miles, still in first, to a friends' home, where I shut her down for 20 minutes. When I left, it shifted normally for the remainder of my 35 mile commute.

Following the K.I.S.S. principle, I plan to change the filter and fluid tomorrow. If anyone has any info or suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

You are on the right path man. Change the fluid and transmission filters (there are 2) and start there. Mine does the same thing if I don't change them every so often.

I've had 3 veshcles that I have taken to the dealer to have a tranny fluid change/flush/replace or whatever (transmission service), soon after I have a transmission failure of some sort. I think it's a racket. so, I too am afraid to change the fluid in my transmission.

usually what happens it that when the fluid is changed it washes the varnish from the old fluid off of everything and increases the friction in the tranny kind of makes sense if u think about it.

yea i unbderstand. but i thought all the friction matirials in the fluid that came off the clutches so when you change the fluid there is no more friction matirials. ... they have this anti slip stuff that suposivly workls pretty good.

its not the material from the clutches its the varnish or residue left from the old fluid.

Blown, that bottom filter says it's for a 99-04, will it work on 05-07? and, in replacing both of these filters, approx. how much fluid will be lost?
