Lockers 2005 dodge dakota
I have been looking at some lockers for my 2005 dakota. I know that is has the 3.92 gears, and that it is a Chrysler 9.25". When I started to look for lockers, I checked into the powertrax, (same one that I have in my old dodge) ARB, and unsuccessfully looked for IMO the holy grail, a gen 2 ox locker.
Here is the question, the Powertrax, listed it as being a 31 spline, but the ARB listed it as being a 33 spline. Does anyone know either what these trucks have in them, or any way to tell without tearing into the diff.
I was looking to do this mainly in the rear axle, with plans to do the front once someone FINALLY comes out with a lift kit for these trucks.
If the front and the back are different, that would explain it, but I never found any information leading me to believe this.
Thanks Guys!

The front isnt the same as the rear and thats why its nearly impossible to get 4.10 gears in a 4x4. The front has reverse rotation or something like that. Hopefully one of the other guys can chime in and let you know the exact difference.
If you look at the differential side of the axel shaft, looking down the axel, it would look like something of a star with a whole mess of points. each point represents one spline.
I seem to remember hearing about the 31, and 33 at one point in time, one was an upgraded axel, but that was on dana 60's I thought.
Anyway I hope that explains it well enough, if not I am sure someone else here can explain it a little better.
I added a pic even though it is not of a 9.25 axel, it shows what I an talking about.

Our trucks have a 8" IFS front differential. 4.10 gears are available for the front and rear. Honestly, most off-road guys don't normally use anything but an open-diff in the front. However, if you are like me, and wanting a selectable locker in the front, good luck finding one.
My Dak has the 8.25" rear end (sucks, but has held up very nicely). There should be plenty of 9.25" rear end options for you...selectable, and non-selectable.

okay finally found the answer that I was looking for.
Unfortunately, the arb is out of the running.
At one point in time ram 2500's had a 9.25 front diff. It was an upgraded one that has 33 splines.
This is the axle that the arb locker fits. I do wonder if it would be possible to take the arb locker, and fit it in the 9.25 under our truck. Then have some of the long side axles of a 1500 cut to it case length on our 9.25. I have no plans on doing this, but it was an idea.
The 9.25 axles under our Dakotas in the rear have 31 splines.
So, all that we are left with in the actual auto locker division are as follows
1 Powertrax $379.99..... http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-128...r-1220-lr.html
(If you have the limited slip differential from the factory, you will need to get a stock open differential carrier to put the powertrax in)
2 Detroit Locker $639.19...... http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDet...px?ProdID=2487
Then there is the permanent lockers. I want my tires to last somewhat though, so no permanent spool for me.
1 Mini spool
2 Full spool
3 Lincoln locker
It appears that even though the 9.25 has been around for a long time, only two actual auto locker have been made available. I am going to do a little more research into the detroit, these are supposed to be top of the line, replaces the whole carrier, and is supposed to be the strongest.
There is a Detroit true track that is supposed to be a hybrid between a locker and a lsd. Uses helical gears instead of clutches. I don't know about that, but it would have to be one ridiculous lsd to get me to go for it at the price of a locker.

I have a Detroit in my Jeep Wrangler... they're top notch 100%
If you've never had one before just know that they ARE noisy and will scare the crap out of you (the first time) and everyone else when they "unload"
...also if your under power while turning they will bind both wheels, and if you plan on driving on the roads in snowy icy conditions, it makes things VERY interesting as it WILL try to swap ends on ya.
As for a 33 spline rear shaft for our trucks, you couldn't just cut a set down, but you could have a custom set of chromolys made by Moser or someone else.
Good luck in your search.
