Sean reset timing like we discussed, looks like the left bank was off off my around 30 degrees. That is enough to get piston/valve smack. I think he's pulling the head tomorrow. I just wish he was closer so I could help him out.

This does confirm one fear I did have. The 4.7L is supposed to be an interfernece motor, so a tooth out of time should keep it from starting. On Travis's, it didn't. A tooth off still allowed him to start it and didn't even throw a code. Sean is the 2nd person I've known to have a 4.7L 30 degrees out of time and still start. The other was an 2000 4.7L with JTEC PCM, now I see it's possible even for the newer NGC as well.

If you did have piston to valve contact, pm me. I'm a dealer through SI valves and I can give you a hell of a deal on some high performance valves.

is it possible to just have the idling issues and not the driveability issues?
