Default Need help getting rid of smoke smell....

Hey all,
My Dak is a 2005 with 90k and when i purchased it from the dealer, there was no smoke smell on the test drive although there was evidence of the previous owner being a smoker. A small burn on the headliner, small burn on the driver's side door panel and a little ash under the driver's seat. I purchased it in the fall and over the winter, whenever i turned on the heat or defroster, you can smell a small trace of smoke. Now that its starting to warm up, the smell is more pronounced to the point my clothes are starting to smell like I was at a bar. Anyone got any suggestions to get rid of the smell? I dont want to febreeze the crap out of the interior because thats just masking the smell. I need to get rid of it completely!! PLEASE HELP FOLKS!!

Mine did too. I have leather seats though. I have a carpet cleaner and used that to clean the carpets and headliner. I also have a constant supply of little tree air fresheners. Over time the smell is fading.

Ha ha, I think he means those pine shaped air fresheners.

I too use "little trees" to scent my car

The car dealer i was at used auto vaccine. its pretty toxic and you have to follow the directions exactly in order to not get sick but as long as you follow the directions it takes the smell out of the whole car and system.

Google is very fruitful on this topic. Lots of suggestions, from Dial soap or Bounce dryer sheets under the seats, to ozone products, to "Atmosclear", to tupperware containers of coffee grounds left open in the car overnight.

After shampooing and deodorizing the carpets, upholstery and headliner, of course. And scrubbing down all the glass and plastics. AC and heater ducts are the hardest, I think.

Well you can buy an air duct cleaner/deoderizer, I think it's a spray. For the rest of the interior, like Corks said, alot of dealers have something they put in the car. The ones I have seen do it, it's like a fogger that fills the car full of a smokey fog then the close the door and let it do its work. Or just go to a good detail shop and see if they do it.

I had the same problem in mine. I used Fabreeze(which by the way does not cover smells but helps remove them) I also went through a billion little tree fresheners and it faded over time. Now it hardly smells at all. The Ford dealer we use for work suggested putting a gallon of vinegar in a 5 gal bucket and leaving it in the truck over night. We did it in one of our work vans and it worked pretty good.
