I need help picking out new tires
My '05 4x4 SLT needs new tires. It has 49,884 miles on them.
I have the original RT/S tires on them.
My first thought is to just buy 3 new ones and use the spare, to save some cash.
I can get them around my area for about $150 installed and balanced.
I know from reading the messages in here that they aren't the best tire.
I'm ok with that if I can save some money using the spare.

I like the raised white letters and am not looking for a super-aggressive tire because they wouldn't look right on my truck.
I'm open to suggestions though.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

hankook at/m are good tires. The rt/s aren't the good years that we all hate. Our hatred is specifically reserved for the OEM version of the Good Year SR/A tires that came on many of our trucks. If yours came with the RT/S, you are already a step above.
That being said, hankook AT/M or Michelin LTX are great all season/all terrain tires that will be quiet on road too.

I had the RT/S tires, and I can't say anything really bad about them. They didn't do too bad in the snow either.
But your spare is from 2005, that's 6 years old already. I wouldn't use an old tire with 3 new ones, just sayin...

Sounds like you are looking for some budget tires.....
Hankooks are good tires, but you are looking at 650+ for them...
A good all around tire try the Dayton Timberlines. a reasonable tire for the price....also typically getting tires reserved online saves you a few $$$ too
Or dare I say... like a Big-O- or something.
make sure to check CL there are always someone trying to get rid of tires for a price.

I should have mentioned that a couple of months ago, one of my tires was going bad, probably a broken belt I was told, so I took the spare off and replaced the bad tire with it.
The spare is the full original sized tire that matches the RT/S.
So right now, I have one basically new tire and 3 worn out ones. The spare is the bad one.
If I bought 3 RT/S's, I would put them on the truck, remove the bad spare and replace it with one of the other worn ones. That would work fine if I flatted some where.
Is there anything wrong with using the '05 spare tire, that's sat for 6 years?
