Default rear diff problem

First off ,thanks in advance.
The other day my truck <2005 2wd v6 LSD> started making a humming/whining sound.. Im not sure if it is tire noise that i nevr heard before? or a wheel bearing or something else. next day i noticed fluid under rear diff. It is coming from where the axle connects to the differential..The pinion seal i think its called? I opened up the diff drain plug to see how much fluid i have left and about 1/2 quart poured out. before stopping. I was parked on level ground so this has to be way to much fluid. Is this the cause of my noise? How much is it to get this seal replaced?

there should be nothing coming out when you pull out the fill plug so it sounds as though it was overfilled (how I dont know). I've never replaced a pinion seal but I think it's been discussed and is not that bad of a job. Check out the service manual, it probably has the procedure.

Yes you can actually have to much fluid, it will burst out the front seal. I did that to mine with a larger capacity rear cover. The tech at Dodge said you have to keep the fluid at the original level or the seal will fail. He removed the driveshaft (3-4 bolts) then there was a large socket for the seal to pull out. It's on there with some torque so make sure you get those specs.

jkeaton.. i dont know how it got sooo over filled either?you would have to have the rear end jacked up i guess. i think im going to take it to the shop for the seal. i dont need my drive shaft falling off any time soon.

Ill paint the cover too when i take it off...the truck is patriot blue, so im going either body color or something like bright yellow...haha

Drive through any deep water and force it past the seal?

patriot blue rocks! I painted my cover red but I think I'm going to repaint it body color, along with my calipers.

no, no deep water or anything ,but it does have 120K + miles on it so its only time before i start replacing thing i guess.
Ive thought about painting my calipers but i think i want to start blacking out the chrome and wheels first.
