3.7L - 6 Speed Ticks and Rattles
I'm curious if other 3.7 owners or 4.7L owners with the 6 speed have noticed a couple things as their trucks accumulate miles. Mine has about 73,000.
1) After switching to Mobil 1 from Quaker State synthetic, I'm pretty positive I have one or more lifters ticking. Not terribly loud, but noticeable.
2) The Getrag 238 is louder than ever. Noises I would describe as coins-in-a-coffee can (1st gear), chuffing/chugging (2-4), clicks/ticks (5,6). Low RPM load brings them out.
My plan? Maintain and drive it until something breaks. I will probably do a trans fluid change soon so clean out any debris. Dodge says the fluid never needs to be changed, FYI.
The truck seems to run fine, shifts fine, and cruises at 65+ no problem. I'm just curious if other owners have experienced an increase in noise as the trucks get older.

Well I just rolled 39k and I have a belt noise of some sort I think or an idler pulley. Atleast I noticed the sound yesterday while it was warming up and I was walking up to it. It also has a heat shield or something making a bit of a rattle near the fuel tank. Other than that nothing out of the ordinary mechanical wise.

my truck has the engine ticking. drives me crazy. started after I switched to synthetic. Reminds me of my Dad's old 72 chevy truck with the 307, man that thing really ticked. Mines not that bad, I'm wondering if anyone else would even notice it if I did not point it out, but I'm hoping it does not get worse. Seems to be worse on cold start ups. 75,000 miles

I changed my trans fluid at 75,000. My truck makes the same low rpm noise yours does. But mine has done it since I bought it brand new with 38 test drive miles on it.
A good way to attempt to stop the lifter ticking is to run a can of BG 109 in the old oil for 15 to 20 min., then drain, then fill with new Mobil 1 Synthetic or Valvoline Synthetic, then add a can of BG MOA, and drive. This might help with the lifter ticking significantly, or take it away completely.

My 3.7L ticks as well. I also have the 6-speed getrag but that's quiet.
I would describe the noise as chatter more then a tick. Had it since the start. Cannot find a solution. It's not hurting anything. Never thought to try anything other then mobil 1. Always had good luck with my extended drains.

2005 3.7L Here. I've been running Mobil 1, recommended weight 5W-30 since the first oil change, no ticks or chatter to report at 67,000 miles. Very, very minor slap on cold-weather startup, but goes away quickly.
What oil weight are those of you with ticks and chatter running?
*A side note, I did have to replace the serpentine tensioner recently, after the bushing between the fixed piece and the floating piece seemed to wear down enough to the point where they grinded against each other. The sound was most noticeable while it was under load from the A/C compressor and you tapped the throttle to "rock" the engine. You could watch as the floating piece vibrated against the fixed piece to the exact tune of the noise. I almost misdiagnosed it as a failing compressor clutch until the tensioner caught my eye.
