If you're going to use a Y, I'd recommend the OEM Y pipe as it is, connected to the catalytic converters. Adding a large diameter pipe won't necessarily help, in a lot of cases it will hinder because the gas expansion and greater surface area of the pipe will cause the exhaust to cool too quick, slowing it down - this will cause a constriction, holding back the hot gases trying to make their way out. If you're looking at a set of headers, I'd recommend dual exhausts with the following configuration on each side - header, cat, exhaust pipe, X style crossover pipe, muffler, tailpipe. Pipe wrapping helps as well. There are quite a few fairly detailed writeups on the internet that can give you the basics on making a V8 exhaust.

my 2 cents, if your installing headers, might as well run true duals with the cross over, etc. Do it the right way to maximize the potential. Don't think you'll notice much of anything except sounding really cool.

Good info man! This has been discussed before and no one ever believes this idea. I am in agreement with you!

I was talkign to a mechanical engineer and he said put the headers on, keep the stock cats and Y Pipe with the true dual setup in an X-PIPE fashion. He said i can put the hi-flo cats in but then i need to worry about MA State Emissions,

yea I'm wondering if mine will throw any emissions codes, I've heard the 4.7 pcm is kinda a stickler for 02 readings. I'll probably try the spark plug fouler trick if I have any.

I'm not sure what that really means. I agree with keeping the stock catalytic converters, but if you also keep the Y, then you you certainly don't need a crossover of any kind and you won't have a dual exhaust. Perhaps you misunderstood him. I'd recommend asking him to draw you a picture of what he's suggesting.
