I had a dakota stolen, they busted the lock out of the column, drove it for 2 months, put 1200 miles on it. Got it back, used a screwdriver to start and drive the vehicle, replaced damaged column, now it will not run!!!!!!! what kind of security will let you drive the vehicle when stolen, but when you try it the legal way it will do nothing.
I would bring it to the dealer..probably needs to be flashed. What year is your Dakota man? I didn't know the old screwdriver trick would work on a 3rd gen..guess I should take that flathead out of my center console!

A screwdriver on a 3rd gen (05+) should not work.
I couldnt even start my truck with a non-programmed Cut Key. (I Tried before I programmed it lol)
The only way I can see, Is if there is a Bypass inplace, Which some Remote Starts have. (aftermarket)
Busting the lock cylinder out of a 3rd gen (05 and up) would activate the anti-theft system. They would not be able to start the truck. It's all computer controlled through the key.
He has a 2005. The reason I know that is because he posted mistakenly in 2nd Gen Dakota, and in that thread he stated his model year. I deleted that one as a duplicate as there were no replies.
Cheeseburger is correct... it seems some of the base models came without the "Sentry Key" system.
ive got 2 dollar keys from Walmart that were cut on a regular key cutting machine and i drove from Birmingham Alabama to Gulf shores Alabama on one of these keys.... Believe that!
