Default Key Fob Remote Broke...So I fixed it.

Yeah, so for the past week I noticed that my key fob wasn't working very well. I figured, being old, maybe it was just the battery, turns out it wasn't the case.

The battery clip had become ever so slightly dislodged from the circuit board. So, I figured what the hell, so I soldered it back together the best I could (still a soldering novice).

Replaced the battery, and NOPE...wasn't working. Did a little digging online and found that I had to reprogram it. Sure enough, looked in my owners manual and there is was...and since I didn't have the extra security chip thing (<--- love the terminology) I didn't even need to dig out my old one. Took only a minute and it's good as new!

No idea what it would have cost to replace from a dealership...do you?

Now, I'm left with a question. After I took it apart I noticed that there is an optional 4th button that I'm not using (assuming for like a trunk release or something). My question is...Do any of you think it'd be possible to program that 4th button to work with my car starter?

Well good job! Geez, I don't even wanna know the price. Also, that probably is trunk, but it could be possible to program it!

I wanna program my 2nd gen fob to work for my truck, then get a 2nd gen key programmed as well.

I was thinking of stripping an electric trunk release from a (Chrysler) wreck and some how rigging it with my tonneau lid. I've found that when I turn the lock on it, it only takes a little nudge before it opens on it's own. So, I'm thinking...add a spring (to push it up) and add the trunk release thingy (to turn the lock) and maybe viola! I dunno, wishful thinking maybe, but I'm sure something is possible.

When I bought my truck, the salesman also had an 05 Dak. He had an aftermarket remote start installed by a sound guy that was activated by pushing both the lock and unlock buttons at the same time. So it can be programmed if done by someone who knows what they're doing.

I like that tonneau idea. Unlocking and locking mine gets old real quick.

At the dealership here, it would cost about $150 for a new key/fob, including programming. Did it for the wife's 2006 Durango back when we first got it, only came with one key. Never doing that again... we are always going to push for two keys for every used car we buy from now on.

I doubt there is a way to get it to work with any aftermarket remote start system. Its designed for the factory remote system only. Here is a picture of my key, and my truck has the factory remote start.

Was just doing a little looking and found those autoloc power tonneau kits where you just install and wire their powered struts. A little pricey, but sure would be nice not having to fool with keys all the time. Only downfall I'm seeing is having an extra remote to lug around.
