Short answer, yes it will fit. Hangs over the back outside corners about a 3/4", and in at the front corners due to the taper of the top rails on the 3rd gen. Inside dimensions are the same.

Ok, I lied. It overhangs a bit. (¼ inch over the sides toward the back) But the inner clamps work fine, and it seals all the way around.

Thought he was referring to a camper top, which experiences the same overhang as your tonneau cover. My tonneau cover was specific to a 3rd gen so I didn't have a problem there, just the camper top. It fits on the inside (bed side) of the rails, but due to the taper of the top rails it is outside the top at the front and inside at the back. You get the idea from the pics. The camper top or tonneau cover (whichever you are talking about) is square. The top rails on the 3rd gen are tapered front to back (not square) on the outside edges only. The inside is square.

Oh, maybe. I wish there was one name for both types. But everyone from different regions call them something else lol. I always heard camper shell growing up.
So it should fit as long as its not the type that contours around the bedrails, it may just look a little silly, but fully functional at least.

This shows the amount of hangover you get with a 2nd gen cap on a 3rd gen (not including the beer)
You can see how the front of the bed rail sticks out a bit in the front while the back end of the rail tucks under the top. Still functional though. For my occasional use of the thing, I didn't mind it. If you plan on keeping it on, you have to decide if you can live with it.
