Default Tranny just went out and I have a question.

I searched, not too extensively, but I did search and couldn't find the answer I was looking for so I figured I would make my first post and introduce myself. I have a '05 crew cab 4x4 Dakota ST 3.7L V6 with 64k miles on it and the transmission just took a giant dump, it completely locked up, wouldn't even go in neutral and had to drag it up on the trailer to tow it home.

My truck has the 42RLE and I was wondering if the 45RFE that came in the 4.7 trucks would bolt up to the 3.7 that's in mine? If so, what if any modifications would I have to do to get it to work properly?

The reason I ask this is because a buddy of mine has a 45RFE laying around that he said I could have if it'll work and I wouldn't be out any money and I could get it back on the road.

If the 45RFE wont work, are there any other swaps that will? I had even considered swapping to a stick shift as I prefer a manual transmission anyway.

Any input on this is much appreciated.

Im sure it will bolt up but the TCM may sh*t a Brick when it doesn't recognize the same transmission...

If all I have to do is change the TCM , than that's not a problem. Cheaper to do that and get the free transmission from my buddy than it would be to rebuild the one that's in it.

What is this a first for? A properly serviced transmission going out at 64K miles? I thought so too, but then I remembered it's a dodge. Haha

Dont think it will work, the new PCM wont work with all the other components without being totally reprogrammed. You could however try the option I have linked below.

Thanks guys for all the input, I'll check into those places. I did see that ATS has a built 42RLE but its only listed for JEEP applications. What are the differences between the JEEP and the Dakota trans?

The TCM and PCM are one unit since the JTEC computers were replaced with NGC. You can't put a 4.7 pcm in unless you take the other 2 cylinders with it. On that note, get a 4.7 and a pcm + wiring harness and you should be set!

But, it might be more cost effective to get a standard trans and standard pcm for the 3.7, though it takes a lot of parts to put the clutch in, and you have to cut the hole in your floor where the cupholder is, the cutout is there, and the dimples for the rivnuts too.

But, ultimately, the cheapest solution is to just repair or replace the trans that is there.
