Default 05 Tranny gone....now what

Hey guys,
got a 2005 4wd with the 4.7. Two weeks ago went to leave work and lost the works. No R, D, 1st or 2nd....toast. Understandable, has a 188k on it. Working on finding a used one to put it.

I have two options:
one for $350 with 176k on it and only a 30 day warranty or
one for $500 with 80k on it and a 60 day warranty.

Now this seems like a no-brainer, but more curious as to what's good/bad about putting a used one it.

Think I would most certainly spend the extra 150 for the trans with half the miles....... after all, you weren't much more than that when yours quit.

Absolutely spend the $500. You just have to hope that it wasn't abused, but 60 days to figure it out is a little reassuring.

Aren't reman's around $1500 with 3yr 100k warranty? I'd go that route if possible. Or maybe see what a local shop would rebuild yours for. If money is that tight, I realize you have no option but to take the risk with a used one.

The issue I am having, is definately money. Nothings cheap these days. But, obviously the trucks worth nothing without a tranny in it. My biggest question is, I've seen a few videos on youtube about warning signs of putting used in. Signs such as making sure rear end gear ratios are the same, and that parts and piece in used can vary from your current tranny. Anyone got info on this?

I've priced reman and with install I'm in at over 2k. Is it worth that? Any opinions are apprectiated.

Rear end ratio doesn't matter. The trans simply doesn't care. Any replacement trans that will actually work in your truck will have the same gear ratios as the one you are replacing in any event.

I have 217000 on mine and still rip the **** out of it, are you positive the tranny is toast? and not just a simple electrical issue?

That's up to you. Do you plan on keeping the truck forever? I faced the same dilemma with mine. I decided to get it rebuilt. Cost me @$2200. Worth it to me as I'm keeping that truck until it turns to dust (or I do first)
