Default Help a.girl out. Transmission problems

Hi, I have a 3rd generation Dodge Dakota. It's a 4 by 4, 8 cylinder automatic . It shifts fine from 1 to second but slips right out of 3rd. The code " improper gear ratio." What the heck does that mean. And what should I try Before I take it to the tranny Shop . I do most my repairs myself or at least try toBut I'm afraid transmissions might be out of my league I won't know until I try

What is the actual code? I assume you have checked the fluid level and condition?

Start with the fluid level, and it does change from cold to hot. You need a level surface, and to check the level in neutral with the engine running (and the parking brake on, obviously).

Errors like these are usually a serious problem, could be an accumulator or cluch issue, but most likely you'll need a transmission shop on this one.
It may require a rebuild kit.

2 things, you have a bad shift solenoid, or your fluid and filters need to be changed along with a complete flush. I would start with a complete flush and new filters and fluid. and welcome

I did the filter and fluid change, twice. No metal shavings in the fluid. I.domt have the actual code . right now., loaned out my meter. Fluid levels are good

U have given be good advice in the past, do you think it would be a waste of time and money to do the solenoids because that's what I was going to try next

I guess it can't hurt to try, you might get lucky and get that Dakota rolling again. I know unless you have a trusted mechanic to bring it to, that should be a last resort. Transmission issues are definitely one of the worst things you'll have to deal with with any vehicle.

Does your scan tool do live data? I'd be curious what the line pressure is doing when it slips.

Also, the trans that came with the V8 has 2 filters... the main pan filter (big flat one), and a spin-on that filters the oil cooler loop. Did you replace both when you did your trans fluid? Or just the one?
