What do you think of the 06 Dakota's 4.7 engine
I'm afraid that I'm going to have to trade down to a Quad Cab 4x4 Dokata with the 4.7 I had a Quad Cab 4x4 Ram Hemi. But it was stolen so I need your impoint .Is this a good tow truck and how's the gas mileage ,the Dakota has a five speed automatic. Both have the towing package. Thanks
i dont tow much with my 05 4.7. just a utility trailer now and then to the dump. but on the average of around town driving i get 18/19 mpg and on the highway 22/23 mpg if i keep it at 65 with the cruise on.
It's not going to win any drag races, but I've had this truck maxed out hauling dirt and it pulled weight very well, better then I had expected. I don't see it having a problem towing common things, but anything big mite be a problem. Gas milage, I'm getting 16/17 mpg all city driving and heavy footed too.
Im not sure how much your trailer weighs but,for some input I have an 05 Quad 4.7 w/ the tow pkg,and it's pretty good w/ the gas milage & towing.
I tow a 24' (camper)and it weighs 4,300 dry my longest trip was 120 miles it tows like a champ around town but the high way seems to a pain, keeping it @ 65MPH but If I just stay on it it'll cruise just fine beyond 70.I know it's an oxie moron but my trailer is kinda old and I like to play it safe.
I've had this truck for 18 months and just hit 22K this past week,I love it & it has served me & my family well.Hope this helps & I wish you luck.

I have a twenty one foot Bow rider I/O boat that weighs in around 3600 lbs and a load rite trailer that weighs in at 2,000 lbs. Its a tandem wheeler. The Hemi pulled it great but They stole it two weeks ago and now I'm down grading it. I don't really need the Hemi that much ,I only use the truck to tow the boat and do some local driving .It was an 04 Quad cab 4x4 ThunderRoad and it only had 13,000 on it in two years. Most of the time it just sat.
I love mine, I get about 17 city and 20-22 highway at 70mph.

I've had two, a '03 CC 4x4 for 41000 and a '06 QC 4x2. The 4.7 is a decent motor but not extremely powerful nor fuel efficient. I averaged 16 in the 4x4 and so far 17 on the '06 (I've only put 2k miles on it) in mostly highway driving. Both trucks had sutos, tow packages, and 3.55 rear ends. The tranny is real nice, love that 2nd passing gear! I think it's the same one that's in the Ram.
Did you know that the '06 Ram Hemi has the MDS cylinder cutoff? My dad has a QC 4x4 with the 20s and in the 25000 miles he's put on it he averaged 17mpg (thats from day one till now, probably 65% hiway, 5% with loads or a trailer) which is much better than his '05. THAT would be the motor I want, if only it was available in the Dakota...
However, the Dakota does have a nicer back seat for passengers, if that's something important to you. And you can get them for CHEAP now!
