Gen 1 87-96
Gen 2 97-04
Gen 3 05- present
alot of people dont call what they did in 92 enough to make it another gen. it would be like calling the 08 dakotas another generation.

A simple "refresh" in the middle of a generation doesnt warrant being called a new generation. For example, simply changing a grill or a headlight housing, or even a bumper swap and maybe a few subltle body changes do not make the vehicle a new generation. When changing between generations, the vehicles usually do not resemble the previous model exactly. The body panels are usually all different, the ride height, wheels, etc...

RE: Gen 3?
Check this out, I guess I now see why Ya'll call the 05+ a Gen 3, but it's really a Gen 4.

Perhaps, Dan, that would be my best guess too. That would seem to be the common thread with the earlier car designations. The '70s F body cars (Aspen, Volare) shared some common parts and a similar size to the A body cars, but with sideways mounted torsion bars. I can think of an exception to that though; early A body cars (pre '67) had a narrower frame than the later A body cars - but that guess would seem to work for how the factory categorizes Dakotas.
Super bee - I understand what you said, I simply said that isn't the way it's done...
None of the car designations ever changed with the introduction of a new motor either.

Kowalski is correct. 87-96 was a single generation to Dodge, labeled as an "N" Body. When they changed the nose in 1991 (to fit the new V8 option) it was simple product evolution, not a redesign of the platform. It still used the same cab, doors, fenders, bed, etc.. All that changed was the radiator support, hood, grill, headlamps, bumper and valance. Separating them into two separate generations was an Internet thing, most likely started on the Dakota Mailing List.
A 97-04 is designated as an "AN" body
05+ is an "ND" body so technically, it's a 3rd generation.
