anyone here ever do some kick boxing or jujitsu?
i go to osu. i dont wrestle up here, although at one point in time (sophomore year in h/s) they were talkin to me telling me if i keep it up they may be interested. at the time, wrestling was life, thats all i did day in and day out.....needless to say after nationals that year i just broke. i broke mentally. after i broke, i didnt take it seriously. after that i realized there was more to life than wrestling. since then i just took it at my own pace and had fun with it. i had the i could care less if i win the tourney or get 3rd or w.e mindset, i just wanted to enjoy myself. i did however finish wrestling throughout the rest of my h/s years. im now a freshman. i have a few friends that fight and considered doing it, but dad said if i do he wont pay for my schooling. recently, since school started this year, ive gained about 15-20 pounds and lost a considerable amount of my lean body mass. i havent been on a real schedule in 2 years. even with gaining this weight, i still look relatively in shape. ive been missing being in shape and wrestling lately, but have had no real motivation to do so. im really into the ufc and pride fighting and tonight after watching some i decided to finally get off my lazy *** and go work out. did some hard lifting (upper body and did some ab work too) for about 1 1/4 hrs then did some relatively hard biking for 45 mins to get some cardiovascular work in. as i was walkin out of the colvin center i saw they had a combat room. (matted floors and walls with heavy bags ect) and decided to take either some kick boxing and/or jujitsu classes starting after spring break. id really like to get back in the grind of things.
just wondering if anyone (in general) has had any experience. im pretty excited about it. also, if your in stilly do u know if we can go in there and just roll around or w.e? i saw times posted on the door for classes, but dont know if its open all the time ect. if so, regardless of your size, if you would like to roll around and grapple or w.e let me know. right now im prob about 180-185, should be about 165 though. i wouldnt mind if your bigger or w.e cuz in wrestling i always had to wrestle our lay coaches (chris barnes and clay holly, both multiple nat champs...on a side note, chris barnes roomed with randy coture at one time and know eachother) and heavier guys in the room, and i was 160-165 wrestling our 215 and stuff, idk what im gettin at, just i guess, dont worry if your bigger than me, it would be good for me. i could use gettin thrown around
sorry this is so long, im gunna go though, im still kinda got the blood pumpin in me and am gunna go take a shower and hit the sac. my head feels heavy, im exhausted. good night

Ummm... Mui Tai is the way to go for striking... but a wrestling background coupled with some jujitsu should make you decent from the guard...
I also wrestled. My school had a youth club that started in 2nd grade. So when I graduated I had close to eleven years of wrestling in me. I also wrestled free-style in the summer to stay in shape. There is a MMA club localy (northern MI) but they have some rules that make it hard to get into the flow of a fight. (like no elbows while down, and no knees period.)
I dont really kick, so taking away my knees makes me just a boxer basicly. I mean a couple of elbows up top, but such limited rage is almost useless.
If you are looking for suggestions on how to get into MMA, train cardio big time... a fatigued fighter punches slower, and with less intensity when he's tired. you also have more confidence if you know you can fight for 2 rounds longer than the actual bout. I havent went in to the gym for sparring at all this winter, too many people think they are going to come in and be like G.S.P or matt huges. then when you clean up, they get all mad and dont follow rules and land illegal blows... It isnt worth it for me to deal with them. I still work out, I just dont get to work on technique.

i wasnt asking how to get into mma (not at all tryin to sound rude) but jw if anyone has done it and or what their experiences were. i have quite a few friends on teams here in tulsa and in kansas city. so if i wanted to get into it, i could get in easily. ya i wrestled freestyle and greco in the summers too. i wrestled on the oklahoma national team for a few years and had some oppertunities to go to some world tourneys in hawaii and germany but never went. i cant start fighting competitavely or my folks wont pay for my school. after spring break im gunna take some classes 2x per week to stay busy/help get in shape/and to fill that hole i feel from not wrestling any more.
for fun, heres my sophmore pic, wheighed 140 and in my prime....crappy stance i know, but its yearbook pic so who cares, just get it over with right?

Are you planning on doing it as a hobby, or as a career? There is a lot to MMA, it was and still is real hard for me to get used to being taken down, and staying on my back in a guard... I would train hard and not think about tourneys untill you have some overall skills that allow you to overcome the instincts that wrestling developed... go in and roll around for a while, you will see what I am talking about. it really messes with your head at first.

just a hobby, like i said, if i were to start fighting competitatively my parents would stop payin for my school. and i know theres a lot to mma, ive rolled with the guys some in the past, i know what your talkin about on how it can mess with your head. i have a little experiance with it, but i want to get in it and do it as a hobby and take it semi seriousely. i was just sayin, if i wanted in, i have connections and ppl to train with and a team to be on. but like i said, i dont really have to option. id rather just do it as a hobby and not worry about payin for my first 4 years than doin it and havin 60-70k in loans before i go to graduate school.

Well, as a hobby its not a huge deal to surround yourself with great fighters, but it will help you grow as a fighter... I am kinda glad to see it actually, its always cool to meet someone who fights. there are not a lot of people who do it, but mma is starting to gain in popularity. I have been fighting for 2 years, have not actually been in a real tourney yet, but I am hoping to this fall... Might go to the detroit mma event...
I was going to go to indiana on scholarship for wrestling, but I couldn't get down where they wanted me, I was getting too weak from cutting weight and meal replacement bars were tearing my stomach up... Thats why I looked into MMA... I am in winter shape right now... (190 and chubby lol) but in the summer I am usually at 175. I dont have a pic of my wrestling days... I will dig something up from my dads maybe...
