Default Tow Package on the '12 Durango

I recently purchased a '12 Citadel with the HEMI but I do not have the Tow Package IV on there. Does anyone know if it's possible to essentially have the tow package dealer installed?

Further, I know the towing capacity is stated at ~7200 but if you don't have the trans cooler, etc (basically the tow package items)...how does that impact the max tow weight?

Not sure how the weight is effected but my R/T did not come with tow and the dealer installed it as part of the deal and it looks just like the factory installed versions. My advice would be to really really inspect it closely because I found a scratch on the superior lip of the paint where they tried to hide it by the plastic insert and white paint over it like I wouldnt notice. Needless to say they are going to fix it.

Thanks for the feedback. Did they do all the harnesses and other wiring as well as the hitch? Transmission cooler, etc?

Figgity,

The trailer tow group IV (AHX) includes the following items:

220 Amp Alternator (BAJ)
7 and 4 pin wiring harness (XF2)
Class IV receiver hitch (XFH)
Full size spare (TBB)
Heavy duty engine cooling (NMC)
Rear load leveling suspension (SES)
Steel spare wheel (WLB)

While it is not recommended that you tow without these items I will try and find an answer as to what the suggested capacity is without the tow package items. The dealer would be able to add these items but I am not sure of the cost.

Thanks Chris. I appreciate the feedback. I'm waiting on the dealer to come back with a cost but given that it is a $700 option, my guess it shouldn't deviate from that too much....

Figgity,
I also have '12 Citadel Hemi, without the tow package. To my surprise it was prewired though, so I ordered the factory hitch and plug and installed it myself. Look under your rear bumper, there should be a round plug hanging there unused (fastened to the plastic bumber support). If so no wirring will be needed. Also, I checked my window sticker and it shows that the 220amp alternator and HD oil cooler came with the Hemi, so yours should already have that as well.

The recommended tow capacity without the tow group is 3,500 lbs.

Do you mean without the trailer package?

My dealer will do a hitch and harness installed for about 500. that is for the factory style whre it goes through the bumper.

Correct. I should have typed without. I changed it in my post. Sorry if there was any confusion.

Default Wondering.

On the list of items that come with the tow package, i find it a little crazy that the tow capacity goes from 6200 to 3500.
220 Amp Alternator (BAJ)....................for 2 extra tailer tail lights?
7 and 4 pin wiring harness (XF2)......big deal
Class IV receiver hitch (XFH).............of course. no effect
Full size spare (TBB)...............no effect.
Heavy duty engine cooling (NMC)...........................What does this mean, and ok maybe
Rear load leveling suspension (SES).......proper toungue weight it would not matter
Steel spare wheel (WLB)..........?????? don't even know what that is.

so besides the (nmc heavy duty cooling) why would it go from 6200 down to 3500lbs.

Seems a little crazy! Any thoughts?

I own a crew and just added my own hitch and electric and plan on towing my 5000lb boat once in a while and can't see why the tow package gives it 2500+llbs pulling power!
