Default had my first No Start this morning (TIPM)

you see, this is EXACTLY why I love forums like this. the collected knowledge you guys have about these vehicles in just invaluable.

it was FREEZING cold this morning. (keep in my mind this is coastal SC, when it literally gets down to freezing we whine like babies around here). I cranked up the auto start before I ran to the Recycle Center this morning and when I got out to load up the Durango, it wasn't running. and when I got in it and tried to start, it just cranked and wouldn't fire. I did that like 3 times. Nothing.

now understand, I've owned this 2011 Durango all of 3 weeks. I bought it used with no factory warranty left on it.

if I hadn't been reading these boards, you what would have gone through my head???

WTF???

follwed closing by: OMG.

followed by: %$#@!

But since I have been reading these boards, it was more like: what? seriously? well count me among the TIPM issues I guess...

I came back a few minutes later and it fired right up. after running my errands I drove to the local Dodge dealership and had a chat with the Service Mgr. really nice guy, knew exactly what I was talking about. told me, "Yep, Chrysler put out the recall and doesn't have the parts ready for it. I hate it when they do this to us."

He explained to me they would install an external relay and how the problem was hit or miss and it had taken them almost until Chrysler put out the recall to nail it down on a couple vehicles that owners had kept bringing in for service for randomn No Starts.

all in all, it was a good conversation. as good as I could expect from him when he did not have the part to fix it now and didn't know when he would get it.

so a big Thank You to the forum members for helping a fellow Durango owner know what to expect and not be caught off guard.

I was able to get 2 kits in the last 2 weeks (the Star case kits) and then they pulled them again and I cant get any. What a clusterfook.

The hell of it is, we've done about 5 of these so far and 2 of them returned with another circuit bad in the TIPM. I'm wondering if they're just making a bigger problem for themselves at this point.

Bus tracks all up and down our backs.

I had the No Start condition again sunday morning and again today, tues morning AND today at lunch. if I stand outstide the vehicle and start it by Remote Start I can hear the fuel pump kick on or not kick on. so I'm pretty sure it is the TIPM and the fuel pump relay.

if I give it a couple minutes it will fire right up. so far. I called the Service Mgr back at the local Dodge dealership early this morning and talked with him. I basically said look, this thing is probably starting to fail. I told him I've read over the tsb bulletin and the relay it calls for is a pretty standard relay I can find all over the internet so why can't I just order one of those and bring it in and have them fix it.

to which he replied (after a pause) I have to use the parts Chrysler sends or else they won't pay for it. which is pretty much what I expected the answer to be.

the Service Mgr did ask if I had called Chrysler yet. and I said No, but I'll be glad to. He gave me the number and I called and started a case. the lady took my info and email and said she would 'escalate' it or something similar so that I would get an email when the parts were available instead of a letter. she said I would get the email much sooner than the letter.

I've also ordered a bypass from Jason at Vertical Visions. its supposed to arrive tomorrow. I can see myself having to install that this week to keep it running until Chrysler gets the parts back out.

ok, received my TIPM1 from Jason at Vertical Visions in the mail today. pic below. nothing but good to say about Jason's product and the instructions he includes. I have discovered an issue though. first here's the pic.

Now, here's my issue...

Remote Start.

the %$#@! M7 circuit, like a bunch of the other accessory circuits are NOT powered up during Remote Start. for those of us that have and use Remote Start, all those nifty little things, like wipers or power outlets, don't actually go live with power until we get in and press the ON button.

so when I installed the bypass, I took out the lower 20A fuse to un-power the existing fule pump relay (that will all make perfect sense when you read Jason's instructions).

I then stood outside the truck and used Remote Start so I could listen to the fuel pump kick on (or not). and each of 3 times the fuel pump kicked on, the truck fired right up but then would sputter and die.

after 3 times I put the lower 20A fuse back in, tried Remote Start and it fired right up and ran. It was getting dark so I went inside an emailed Jason but as soon as I sent the email it hit me, the M7 circuit does not stay powered on during Remote Start.

the bypass works like a charm, when used the way it was intended. but I would prefer to use my Remote Start function. so now the quest is to find a similar 20A circuit that powers up with the key (not direct battery connect and ON continuosuly) AND powers up with Remote Start.

is there such a circuit? suggestions?

I put my theory through some tests last night and my 'theory' just doesn't stand up to my results. love the Scientific Method.

I do not think I have an issue with Remote Start per se, the Power Outlet #2 (storage bin) and Power Outlet #3 (rear hatch -pic below) ARE receiving power during Remote Start operation.

I think what I have here fits right in line with Jason's (at Vertical Visions) comments. he says sometimes the M7 circuit does not receive power during Start Up and he can't exactly explain why. and by 'sometimes' he means from vehicle to vehicle, not from one start to another.

my M7 circuit is getting power during Remote Start operation right along with my circuit for Power Outlet #3 (rear hatch -in pic). the issue seems to be the actual start up process.

when using Remote Start, the fuel pump will kick on and the engine will fire. but then it sputters and dies. so the M7 circuit gets power initially, it just seems to be cutting out during Start Up.

all this is mostly information and feedback for whomever on the boards is also having this issue.

in real world experience, Jason's relay is saving my bacon right now. this morning I walked out to the Durango, did the Remote Start key fob dance, the fuel pump kicked on, the engine fired very briefly and then it sputtered and died.

I shook my head, opened the drivers door, got in, Pressed the ON button (WITHOUT my foot on the brake, so the truck goes into ACC mode) waited half a second and put my foot on the brake and pressed the ON button again.

truck started right up and I'm on the road driving.

Oh, and I immediately called the Dodge-Chrysler customer service number. I've called them each of the last 3 mornings. I'm going to call them each time I have a No Start and have them log it in my file.

at some point they will get the message that I will call every day until I get my part.

Took mine to the dealer this morning for non-starting issue (V6 engine). Mine would eventually start after doing 3-4 cycles of the OFF-ACC-RUN trick. All ready to pick up at Overland Park Jeep/Dodge, faulty fuel pump relay, now externally bypassed.
