What do you mean by stage 1? There are tons of threads on making homemade cai's, either replacing the whole thing or you can keep the stock airbox and replace just the hemihat if you want. I have a recent thread in the general discussions section, and if you search cold air intakes you will find dozens and dozens of threads. There is also a diy write-up in the diy section for replacing the entire system.

Here's my thread

heres the diy

As Ewing said there are plenty of DIY CAI.
And for Stage 1, there really isnt 3 stages like performance car parts, esp if you build your own CAI.

Also as Ewing said the only real options you have are removing the stock filter box, and the Hemihat or leave the Hemihat and take off the stock filter box. If you are trying to keep it cheap def build your own, Home Depot has parts for Ewings DIY CAI.

Any links to DYI setups that include a shroud (other than the stock box) to feed the filter colder air and keep grime off?

Not that i know of. But if you are good with metal or have a welder ypu could easily put up one.

I would have liked to keep mine closed but right now its not happening.
You prolly wouldnt want to do this but my first CAI on my ram was the stock filter box with no hemi hat, i had a piece of exhaust(This was before id have ever seen anyone running PVC) tubbing running from the TB to the Filter Box. It was the same noise wise and HP gain wise as any CAI ive done even with the stock paper filter.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I'd like to keep the stock Hemi resonator and ditch the filter box. I would like to do pvc pipe from the resonator to a K&N filter. My buddy said don't bother with the Spectre filters from Autozone cuz they're junk. I don't know. The Spectre look the exact same as the K&N's do.

So, I know that 3" pvc pipe hooks on to the throttle bottle but I need the pvc to hook on to the resonator. Is that still 3"?

Wow. I've never seen anyone who wanted to keep the resonator lol. But it is still all 3" and you'll probably just use a rubber coupling just like all the CAIs.

As for the shroud question there was a post on an F-150 forum where a guy used one of those trashcans you would see around an office and cut it up to fit in the engine bay around the filter. Cost him about 10 bucks for the trashcan and the foam stuff to go inbetween the hood and the shroud.

Lol me either it breaks up the quick air flow kinda lessening the whole point of a new intake.
