Going on a trip
Im going to be driving from Maine to florida and back hualing a uhaul. My truck gets 13/14mpg on the highway how do I figure the cost for fuel down there? And what should I do/check to my truck to get it ready for the trip? thanks
What engine? How many miles? What have you done to it maintenance-wise? Mid-grade here runs about $2.60-$2.80
Do NOTHING to it at least a week prior to departure. Nothing worse than having a simple local problem turn into a long-distance disaster.

If you are gonna change fluids, do so about 2 weeks prior to your trip. Like Mikey says, better to have an issue due to a boo boo you may make while changing fluids happen BEFORE you are away from home.
Also, for mainly highway driving, get the air in your tires up to about 90% of the max cold pressure (I don't like to run at 100% in summer, cause the excessive heat adds to the pressure). Airing them up will give you the least roll resistance and net you the best mileage possible.

Use yahoo map or something similar to give you the mileage. Divide your gas MPG into the distance which will give you the gallons needed to make the trip. Multiply the gallons by something like $2.80 and that will give you fuel cost.
Something like this:
Portland to Miami -1600 miles
1600/13 (mpg) = 123 * $2.80 = $345.00
Round trip $345 x 2 =$700
Have a good trip...

Pulling a trailer back will seriously affect the return fuel cost.
**EDIT** Just realized it's trailer round trip. You can probably figure about 8-12 mpg, depending on trailer size. One good thing: At least 1/2 the trip will be downhill.

New tires or new "used" tires at a minimum. Don't take any chances on the interstate...blow out @ 70 pulling a trailor = bad news brother!!
I was afraid of that. Like GasGuy said - new tires or good used tires should be at the top of the list. I've bought several sets of used tires for local runnin' around. They would have probably been OK for long distances, but I never tried that.
