Default Tuneup estimate too pricey?

passing the 100k mark the truck runs great... but i can tell it needs a tuneup. Im aware it has 16 plugs and half the engine's buried under the firewall - But the guy quoted me $500 for plugs and wires. Mind you its an American Tire but still that seems a little high.. no?

Maybe im just overlooking how labor intensive it is. I'm new to engines like this.

500 Sound reasonable to you?

I was quoted $600.00, and just did them myself. It isn't really that difficult to do, just a couple of hours, a few swivels and socket extensions and you're there. Just remove the driver's side tire and skirt and the plugs under the fire wall are pretty accessable. There are lots of people who have done this on this site and have left perfect DIY instructions under general discussion on how to get this done. Same goes with your diff fluids, trans fluids, radiator flush etc.. Save the $$$ and do it yourself. That's what makes this site incrediblel- tons of help, and a good roasting for doing something stupid!

The two back plugs are a bi*tch!!! but do-able. Labor is just getting crazy high all over, not just at the dealerships.

Good quality wires = $75, Champion Copper plugs about $40, so the rest would be labor. Depends on if you wanna pay someone upwards of $400 for about two to three hours work because it DOES take that long to change them. Gone are the days when I had 4.0 I6 engines in three Jeep Grand Cherokees and two wranglers. I could do plugs, cap, rotor and wires in 30 minutes...

Just had mine done today. $225 labor $4.00 per plug = $306 and change. Like Hammer said the back 2 looked like a bitch by the master cylinder, that's what discouraged me from doing it, well....that and getting lazy in my old age LOL

Those plugs are nothing no one cant handle if they just take thier time and count to ten while doing them. If thats what guys are paying to have plugs changed then maybe I need to post my skills and a price.

was going to do mine myself until as everyone has already stated, i saw the back 2 lol. BUT now with the body lift things are much easier. except body lift + suspension + 40s = ladder to get up into the hood lol

I had my plugs replaced about 2 months ago at a local shop. I bought the plugs and took them with me and they charged me $170.00 to put them in.

Honestly, I figured most guys that posted to this forum would be at least doing the maintenance themselves. Especially the on any make or model, but it is always do-able. Hardest plugs I ever changed in my life were on a 4.3 auto S-10. Had to remove driver wheel liner to get to one...took us 2 1/2 hours for that job....

But yeah pretty much 5 bills on labor and parts is sky-high rediculous....you will save big $ long term if you can do it yourself...Just my
