Gear swap progress
I stand corrected. I think I was at 0.007 when my pinion load was too high, but just recently, adjusted from .010 to .006. Same noise, different range (smaller range and at lower speeds going to 0.006). I mean, damn ... no noise on accel, the noise is barely noticable on decel, but it's there. The loudest is when I'm maintaining speeds anywhere from about 45 to 50+ ... you know what, I'll check backlash when I do the oil change. I'll be changing that out in the next couple of weeks.
From what I read online your temps will go down more over the next few thousand miles. I felt like mine were on the verge of being too hot after some long highway runs, but it seems to run cooler now that I've got a lot of miles on them. At this point you've done everything you could besides buying new gears and as they wear in they will either stay the same or get louder. From all the work you've done I'm sure yours will sound the same in 10k miles as they do now.
dude, sorry to hear that. they were 3.92's but I'd have to look and see if I even have them around anymore. Plus the ring gear had two busted bolts lodged in it - meh ... anyway.
check this out if you need a carrier, http://moesperformance.com/index.php...oducts_id=9046
Less than $800 out the door for everything you need to rebuild your axle with whatever gear you want.

Areinike- Have you been happy with the change to the 4.56 gears? Ordering from Moe's and flip-flopping between 4.10 and 4.56. I currently have 3.92 with 265-70/17. I mainly drive in town but I travel on highway about 3x's per month to motocross races (average 2.5hr's one way).
Oh yeah....great thread! I've read it numerous times.

Well, for one thing, if you already have 3.92's, I wouldn't even consider 4.10's. I've been happy with my 4.56's for two reasons. Towing. It's like night and day towing my 5200 lbs. travel trailer versus the 3.92's I had. In city driving. It seems to get up to speed with noticeably less effort, in hopes this saves me some gas.
In my case, I hardly ever drive on the highway except when I'm towing or running a quick errand (less than 10 miles). The RPMs are a little higher (around 2K at 60 MPH) so expect to lose about 1-2 MPG on the highway and gain about that much in the city. I don't know what my MPG was when towing since I only did one trip with the 3.92s about 20 miles so don't have much of a baseline to go against.
So basically, what I'm saying is, if you want to notice a difference, go 4.56 if you already have 3.92's. I don't think it's worth the swap to 4.10's, personally.

Areinike I went through the smae thing when I had my gears(motive also) changed from 3.55's to 4.10's in my 05 1500. A good mechanic put it togehter for me and the exact whine you described is the same thing that gave me trouble. After talking to a shop that only deals with rear ends said that something about the new rear ends and any gears but dodge are a good combination for a whine. They even said that some factory diffs they have worked on have a slight whine(mine did from the factory at 45-50). Basically the shop said if you can live with the noise and you know the gears are set up right( they did recommend a little loose on the backlash, about .008 is where mine was left) drive it till the wheels fall off. While pulling a 4500 lb trailer the noise does get very lite. Thanks for hard work you put into this.
