Apparently I was all wrong about this. I had printed these pics out and took them with me to the dealer to get a part for the truck and one of the service guys saw it and asked me what I was doing. Well, he took a look and told me that 0.035 was too deep. Contrary to what I thought was wrong and everyone else thinking 0.035 was good, it didn't phase me to think backwards. He showed me how the pattern suddenly "bottoms out" on the 0.035 shim and that 0.032 was about right and to try 0.031" even. So i order both 0.032 and 0.031 shims (ordered 0.032 because the shop that had the truck tossed it I guess). Anyway, not even going to talk about that mess. Truck will be apart again this weekend, at my house. Anybody want to help? South Miami/Homestead area, bring beer! lol
Too deep huh, well he's the tech and doesn't have any stake in it, worth a shot to get them quiet. Hope this is the last time you have to have this thing apart, good luck.
And luck as we have it, worked! Set the shim to 0.032" and got a little whine, but nothing like what I was hearing. I'm going to give it a couple of trips to work itself out since it has about 275 miles on the gears ... right away, it was MUCH quieter. Unbelievable that I was able to set up the new shim in about 5 hours since I am now, very familiar with this god forsaken rear axle!
I will definitely be writing something up. I didn't take a lot of pictures this time around as I just wanted to get it done. Definitely some tips and what not to do's I've learned long the way. Overall, I'm happy.
