So if the 'hat' is simply a resonator, as it is labeled on my 4.7. Then is there any reason not to run straight tubing to the air cleaner box? Has anyone done this and experienced 'gains'?
Reason is, it was explained to me that throwing a K&N, and ditching the 'hat' is just as good. That the filter box already has a 'snorkel' pointed toward some cooler air and is protected from heat as well.
Sounds okay, but really? Where is the cool factor in that? lol
But really, penny for your thoughts...

It's fine and is commonly done. The "hat" is the big restriction followed by sharp bends in the tubing. A removal of the hat and straighter shot to the air box would essentially give you close what a CAI would do.
Only place a true CAI would give additional gains is from the added surface area of a cone type filter, but you'd be in the ballpark...

My '06 has a straight shot from the hat to the filter box.(4.7l Magnum) So would I just need to remove the hat and plumb it from the tb to the straight pipe that already runs into the filter box? I tried to snap a pic of it but it was just too dark in the garage to get a good pic. It is the big rectangular hat with 4.7l Magnum written on it.

Total time: 'bout 25min
Additional parts used: some evap/pcv hose and elbow I had in my tool box and a dime sized portion of epoxy.
Not pretty by anymeans, but functions. I see no reason why a straight tube and rubber fittings from the DIY Intake section at my local auto parts store would not work. Would look alot better as well.
Did I notice anything? Yup, throttle response seems crisper , 'lil bit louder without the box, but other than that not much. Honestly, the new Dynomax Ultra Flo Cat-Back exhaust I installed two weeks ago has made all the difference in this.
And since we all know threads are much better with pictures...
