Default Towing with factory bumper

Hey yall I bought a 95 Mustang GT Convertible and have to go to Houston to get it. Can I pull a U Haul car trailer with the factory bumper/ ball? It says 5000 lbs with 500 lb tongue weight.

Appreciate the help!

If youve got the tow package, then probably. If not, then maybe not. Need more info on your truck.

I'm pretty sure the bumper ball can only handle somewhere around 3000 lbs

I wouldn't trust it. I ripped my friend's bumper right off his ram pulling him out of the mud. I wasn't even jerking it. Not that you'd be doing this, I just wanted to let you know how weak it is.

Hmm...I have done it numerous times with my 97 GT vert....The big thing to make sure of is the tongue weight is correct.

Considering that 97 GT's don't come with a bumper hitch, and if you towed anything with a Mustang, you had to have a frame hitch installed, I see no relevance to this post as to the question asked. I had a 97 cobra that I towed boats with, but a full size car trailer and a car, I would never attempt that kind of load with a Mustang. Remember, it's not just the towing part, it's also the stopping part, and 97 Mustang Gt's brakes are way too small for this load

You should quickly get an answer to your question when you go to the uhaul dealer and try to rent a car dolly. If it is too much, they will tell you and probably wont allow you to rent the dolly.

My opinion, i wouldnt try it. I would invest in a frame mounted receiver hitch and go with that. Maybe can pickup a Reese at wally world for not a lot of money.

I agree with 04Hemi, you may be able to tow with the bumper ball, but frame mounted hitches aren't that expensive and are much safer to tow with. If you plan to tow frequently at all, I would invest in a real hitch.
