I'm not sure about the dome light but you can check them easy enough.Since the cig lighter wire is hot with the engine running,I started my truck up and used my voltage tester to find the hot wire.If ya need help,I can give you a detailed description as to how I'm gonna wire mine,unless you already have a plan.

 

Is there a wiring schematic in the manual? I was just hoping someone had the answer on hand.

I just want to add the lights such that there are floor lights, so when the door is open, or the dome light is on etc, the blue floor lights are on.

Problem is I have 18" light strips and I'm struggling to find a place to put them on the driver side. There doesn't seem to be any easy way to mount them under that side.

 

I don't know about the schematics but what you can do is look in the trucks fuse box.On the inside of the lid it will tell you the location of the fuse for the dome light.You can put a fuse jumper

That's not a bad but since I had most of the panels of anyway I traced it out. The manual says its a brown wire.....it is

I found it up in the A pillar but it goes to the instrument cluster, so I can tap into it in the A-pillar. I just need to figure out how best to approach it. Not much space, and not much wire to work with.

 

Radio Shack has snap in wire taps that make life alot easier when it comes to connecting 2 wires.A little over 2 bucks for a 6 pack I think.Maybe worth it to check it out.

 

Well I can solder and heat shrink wires for free No problem for an electromechanical engineer However that may be easier and I just might go that route.

I'm not going to use the 18" strips though as they flash a ton of colours and won't go straight blue unless I push a button multiple times each time I power them up.

I've got a ton of blue, UV and RED Led's. I guess I'm going to find places to mount a couple of them some how.

I wonder if I can reuse the bulbs and sockets from my cougar in some fashion....muhahahahaha.

 

turns out between my current cougar and the previous one, I will have two brackets to hold two floor light sockets with my 6xsmd lights
I'll just need to find a good mounting spot.

 

Just don't use the dome lamp circuit to power the lights directly, I would suggest running a wire from the battery through a relay then to the floor lights, and have the dome light circuit drive the relay to turn them on and off....

 

Why is that?? What problems would be caused by driving the LED's from the dome light supply?? (Br, Rd/Y)

Could a small electronic relay work, such as a reed relay?

 

I'd use at least a 10AMP relay for LED floor lights... but I would size the Fuse depending on the actual draw you will experience.

As for powering the lights directly from the dome light... that system is not designed for much more draw than it experiences, maybe around 1-2 amps to work with there, so it just isn't a very good idea to power the lights directly like that, but it will be perfectly okay to drive a relay and power the lights via the battery.
