Question about trailer towing and wiring
Hey all!!
I have a 2005 Ram 1500 Hemi, and it came with the standard 4-wire trailer connection at the rear bumper. I need to start hauling an RV, which has the round 7-pin connection. I contacted Dodge and they said it was going to run about $200 to purchase and install the 7-pin harness on my truck. I went to Northern tool, and found a 4-pin to 7-pin adaptor, do these work? I am also going to install an electronic brake module up front, which should just plug into the harness, correct? Any help would be awesome!!!

If you use a 4pin to 7pin all you will get is running lights, brake lights and turning signals.
If you want the power brake, reverse lights and the 12 volt feed you will need to get a real 7pin RV plug installed. You can buy these at an auto parts store. You only need to know how to run wires and have a volt meter to test the leads.
But if you do not feel like you could handle the wiring then you may want to pay someone. If you wire something incorrectly you could short out your rear lights.

I looked at that plug again. It has the 3 extra wires pigtailed off of it. So you will only need to wire in your Reverse lights, Power Brake, and the 12volt feed then plug in your 4pin plug.

Who ever you got the trailer from ,let them do the wiring then if anything happens it's on them not you. Those electric brakes take practice to use. .
Thanks for all the info everyone. I decided to let my local Dodge dealer install the 7-pin harness. Better safe then sorry. The RV dealer is going to install the electric brake controller which just plugs in under the dash.
