The more I research this, I am wondering if I will need to mod the fan as well. We shall see.[:@]

As for not having a thermostat at all....I know I have done this many years ago but only for short periods of time. Only long enoughto get to the autoparts store to get one.

Squrting warter out of yer sparkplug hole sounds more like a warped head which can be a direct result of overheating. So if your old thermostat was cheezed and not opening as it should (or not at all) and yer engin overheated then the damagemighthave occuredprior to you removing it.

I could be wrong.

Alright I went over and lerked around at HTC and here is the best post I found...

Here's a quote from a Dodge engineer on another site. I actually spoke to him before I did thismod. I wanted to make sure it was the right thing to do. Make sure you install a STAT with a bypass post, like the stock T-STAT has.

I also use a 180°F t-stat in my modified 5.7L Hemi Ram and have not had any problems. The 180°F t-stat will lower the under hood temps as well as the air inlet charge temps. The engine will also be a lot less prone to spark knock with the cooler cylinder head temperatures which is very important when the modifications that have been done result in a leaner air-fuel-ratio because of the speed density engine control system which is what the 5.7L Hemi uses. I highly recommend the use of a 180°F t-stat in all modified 5.7L Hemi engines.

As I read this I am hoping I got the right Thermostat (with the bypass post) it was a different part number for the 03 and up and alot pricer.

If not I can return it and getthe Stant 180 thermostat from NAPA, which is posta be the magic bullet. Even though it is 64mm you can trim it down to 63mm (if needed).

As far as Codes go I didn't see to many people say they got codes, their were some that were concerned they would get codes.

Some of the guys that lived in the "Great White North" still used 180s but returned to stock in the winter.

Only after I take out the OEM will I be able to compare them first hand.

Giggity! Giggity! Giggity! I am excited!
key word: MODIFIED there are reviews that people will clearly state...if you dont need it, dont install it

for you guys in cold climates I would just stick the stock one back in for the winter. I will be the first to say I do not know exactly why I am just spewing out some info from the hemi gurus on other boards that build all the stroker motors. Basically your motor does not heat up enough in the cold weather with a lower tstat. For me being in las vegas I could run one year round since the coldest it ever gets is like 40 over night but I would just stick the stocker back in when it starts getting colder out.

off topic, hansonhvac, if business is ever slow in minnesota you should consider moving to the desert somewhere. One of my best friends is an hvac tech and he has more work then he knows what to do with year round.

Deanj287,
Sometimes I have problems trying to follow your train of thought bro.
You seem pretty hell bent against the 180 Thermostat mod.

I fully understand "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality...but
What is yourconcept of Modified?

I don't think he is against it, I think he is just saying it is bad for real cold climates. So all he is saying to do is run it when it is hot out but switch them back when it gets cold.

ok this is the part i dont understand.... you said it wont get as hot with a lower tstat, but either way if you put one in down in vegas its going to open at 180 degrees. If i put one in in the dead of winter in minnesota, its still going to open at 180 degrees.

both... my line of thought is that for those of you that have the mods that could use the extra rich af ratio use it. then for those that are in colder climates i have personally witnessed the codes when its to cold. and this is dallas cold mind you at 40degrees out. (i also said to make sure to run one that is the same flow design as stock... and that there are certain ones others have found that dont throw codes. ) and like i said before you need to make sure that its not overkill in extreme heat. im in no way bashing the 180thermo stat. works great on other cars, trucks etc.... its people that think every bolt on works and every degree colder is better. some have had issuses with it sticking open (to hot) and causing other issues with their engine.

others have ran it for years in the hemi with no problems. i drive more than 30,000 miles a year. my concern is never the biggest kick in the pants for the time being but how long will the affects im after last?? not to mention fuel milage and carbon build up...

i was inches away from gettint the 180 myself before going with the 195. i read one to many people saying they tossed it out and where much happier with the 195. they reported better throttle response fuel mialge etc...

im not trying to bash anyone, i simply asked others before i made the change is this is what i have been told, seen and now can say have experienced. i like to know all the angles to and mods im doing. like a turbo...ya great power and hard on the motor etc... get it??

what i have brought up is that many have reported that it CAN/HAS thrown codes and the code is that the coolant is not hot enough. so if thats the case how can it reach 180? as soon as the stat opens and lets the 180 coolant through colder coolant comes in that is not 180 and the engine starts working on getting that coolant to operating temps. when that coolant heats up its cold enough outside that the coolant in the radiator has cooled down significantly to the point it is no longer near the normal operating temp. thus the codes. when its to cold out for a 180 the coolant isnt flowing as fast through the block,,, the t stat isnt opening as much and the coolant in the radiator has more time to cool and cools below i guess what might be a medium of cooling and heat retension that is needed to keep things operating at their peak.

i dont know how else to explain it so pappy_fb best of luck then...

and like i said before.. this was never a bashing or anything. i like to know the complete ins and outs on anything and everything before i go through the proccess of putting it in my truck. id think others would simply like to know as well. **** id love it if people poured out info with out haveing to ask all the small questions especially when there are questions you may not realize exsists...
