If you test before and after in the same conditions
and the IAT sensor reads lower with the modification
then it is a CAI.
If the MAP sensor reads higher afterwards
then it is also a 'less restrictive' air intake.
And if the stopwatch built into your cell phone
shows that you can accelerate faster from 40 to 70 mph
up a really steep hill....
then it is an performance improvement
and not just extra noise or flashy colored parts AND a lighter bank account OR heavier credit card bill.

Just an observation but that setup looks pretty decent. To my eye I don't think the stock airbox would make a difference since is does draw draw air from the fender well area( also K&N and airraid both use the stock location). Most CAIs just use an open filter setup which to me looks like it would suck in air from the same area but still grab some hot air coming off the engine. In my opinion the the 5.7 draws it's air from the right place, it just baffles it with the plastic tube as well as a cheap filter to the throttle body. I could be wrong in this but to me replacing the whole thing looks like kinda a waste. Could you not just makes the opening on the filter box bigger, replace the hose to the throttle body and buy a better filter to see the same gain as spending upwards of $300 ?
